I think that was the store Peter worked in, He is in his 70's now but can still remember the artist, title, release date, and catalogue number of any record from the 50's to the 70's.
I actually bumped into him this lunch time in the club. Handy bloke to have on your team in a music quiz. Really nice feller

Scary that this is something to get nostalgic about - but they have probably been gone for over 10, maybe 15 years. Believe they were originally part of the Woolworths empire, first I encountered was in Horsham, Brighton one was in Air Street I think and they quickly spread to many other towns (Eastbourne, Worthing and Hastings all acquired one). Spent a lot of money in them over the brief years of their existence, membership fee was something nominal like 50p for life and they usually had a good range of stuff. I think Woolies sold them, the chain changed its name (can't remember what to) and went down the pan shortly afterwards. In a few short years threads like this will be featuring Blockbuster!

They had dirty great big seams down the side.

In 1992 I worked in a pub in Dunstable and there was a balloon shop called "Blow Jobs". I can't say I miss it. In fact it might even still be there. I doubt it though. Not much call for balloon shops these days I'd imagine.

Beals, East St
Lewis G Smith, Grand Parade

From kids to architects, each was a goldmine of stationery and similar, but they variously had other bits like detailed OS maps, and other stuff for kids to nose around.

Gillets was later demolished for the building that now includes Karen Millen etc.

Anyone else remember Attrix Records in Sydney Street, and Vinyl Demand, somewhere off Trafalgar Street? Many happy teenage hours and much money spent in those places.

First post, btw....

Used to buy and sell records at Vinyl Demand - at the bottom end of Trafalgar St near Pelham St in a rundown area that seemed ex-WW2 bomb damaged or simply not finished by town planners when they built the hideous Theobald House flats nearby.

Vinyl Demand was miniature, but an Aladdin's Cave of everything from the Beatles to Ultravox with John Foxx.

AA Bakers on the London Road where you could get subbuteo stuff as well as getting your football inflated.

The newspaper shop up from Patcham crossroads I think was called barrets not gills,maybe the name changed
