Ah, here we go, a classic example of the wacky festive photoshoot, featuring "Fash & Vinnie".

And, er, Michaela Strachan, it would appear.

It's gone downhill from the good-old days though (mid 80's was my time).

It's all Premiership guff, done in a sub-tabloid style.
"Isn't Wayne Rooney great"
"Stevie Gerrard loves his new boots (large picture showing manufacturers logo)"

There was an interesting article in WSC last month picking up on exactly tha. It compared football magazines nowadays with how they were20-30 years ago. Back then you had a decent layout with stories and articles presented in almost "proper" newspaper-fashion.

These days, the headlines are vast, the colours migraine-inducing, none of the sentences end without an exclamation mark or three, the writing is tilted and wrapped all over the shop, and its all presented in glorious text-speak.

Sign o' the times.

The screamers and tilted writing keep the kiddies happy these days, though Easy. But I agree about the text-speak. Hate it with a passion. Shoot's sales plummeted because it had become extremely boring compared to Match, and crucially, it wasn't sure whether it was a serious footy mag or a young, throw-away piece of monthly fun.

When KiCK! then launched two-and-a-half years ago, Shoot's sales went down further. They finally decided to go more kiddie and re-launched, nicking all the best bits from Match and KiCK! and things got a bit better for them sales-wise, but going weekly was the final nail in their coffin.

Kids today want instant entertainment - and gifts. The trick is to try and entertain and inform at the same time. And Shoot wasn't doing that in its final days.

Although I'm obviously biased, the other mag I work for, National Geographic Kids, has the best blend of entertainment and education. It's bright, colourful and fun, but stimulating as well. And it uses proper vocabulary, completely free of text-speak. Parents, teachers and the kids themselves love it, which is a right result! :)

Highly unlikely to get that sort of thing again, sadly, 'cos footballers (or their agents) are far too concerned about their image these days. You bust a gonad to get ten minutes on the phone with a player, let alone dress him up in drag

Every interview with a player now- see FourFourTwo, for example, is facilitated by the agent via the player's sponsor.

So the interview appears "courtesy of Nike Total Air 90, the preferred boot of X".

That Guardian article is quality, imagine a player now claiming they'd love to be a bookie when they wound up playing, as Leicester's Gary Lineker does.

Yep the league ladders were great and very theraputic!

Especially when the Albion were doing well & Palarse were struggling!

I'm quite tempted to make my own set for next season.
eastlondonseagull - your mag doesn't fancy resurrecting league ladders does it?

We are talking about it, actually ;)

Ooh, and can we have a proper, retro Panini sticker album then too? From around the Mexico 86 era please.

I'll swap you Olaf Thon, Steve Hodge, Hugo Sanchez and Cha Bum Kun for Kerry Dixon and a silver Canada team badge.

:lolol:
