How on earth can you expect the Greens to preside over service cuts and increased charges that will mean that people ( a lot of whom are already struggling ) will suffer even more?

So those of us already struggling with higher food prices, higher fuel prices, no pay rises and even loss of jobs should just stand by and let councils raise tax more and more and more and more ? Our family are already stretched to breaking point but the council seem to think paying THEM is the most important thing. Personally I'd rather pay my mortgage and let the Greens swivel !

The rise only affects those who are ABLE to pay it. The struggling families you speak of are mostly exempt form Council Tax anyway.

If you can't afford it you don't have to pay it, it's as simple as that

I posted aa speech by Murray Rothbard earlier today. Anyone who finds these kind of questions (state interventionism/central planning vs free makets/liberty) would probably find it really interesting.

I'll repost here.

I thought the reasoning behind the 3.5% rise is to push ahead with the Greens agenda. Increased revenue from council tax will allow more travellers sites and help pay police bills for numerous protest marches and rallies. Residents who are on a raft of benefits will only pay a pittance and the student population will avoid it altogether claiming they've paid it to a landlord.

I'm sure a benevolent and beneficent Tory council would never attempt to raise taxes like this, they would raise the tax by " efficiency savings " such as cutting jobs and other services.

As a footnote, I'm old enough to remember the famous Tory POLL TAX, yes the one most Tories try to forget now. At the time I was married with 2 kids in a 2 bed terrace house with a rateable value of about £220 per annum.
Under the new tax,the next year, my wife and I were expected to find £660 per year between us, yes thats a three times increase. After the riots and civil disobedience they then said they would grant transitional support......we had about £100 knocked off each.

3.5 % increase, bloody lightweights them Greens

Well its a bit of a backhanded compliment. Which will probably result in various posts as to what a twat I am, or have been.

I would never do that but I have to say the original premise of the thread did cause me to raise an eyebrow......................

I note from that he was a supporter of the individual against the state except when individuals were demanding equality before the law when he all of a sudden became a supporter of "States Rights" (i.e the Deep South version of Apartheid).

Greens' agenda?

I.e. basically to keep the services in this city running as we are used to? The government are giving them less money, so the choice is either raise council tax or cut services. If they had chosen the latter, there would be countless threads down the line from people who have lost their jobs, or that there are less rubbish collections, or that their kids have non-specialist teachers in the classroom. Anyway, it's democracy. Nationally, we have voted for a government who just want to stop spending, and those of us who don't like it are having to lump it. So I am quite happy that locally we have elected a council who won't.

What I find interesting is... you don't live in Brighton, so it's not going to be easy for you to comment on local politics with any great sense of insight. It's evident you don't like the Greens, but because you're not up on local politics here, I'm just wondering where your spurious pisspoor stereotypical comments come from.
