I used to quite enjoy going to the base back in my late teens made a change every now and then from Worthing, Brighton or Crawley

That's harsh on Chichester.Lovely city centre and some individual shops.Worst bits are the traffic hold-ups caused by level crossing going down about 2 hours before each train arrives!!
Could do with livening up a bit for the younger generation...a nightclub for instance.
How about Bognor Regis town centre for a dump nomination....just visit it and you will see what I mean!Full of chavs and people of the mis-shapen variety!

I was born in Chichester and moved back there after Hangleton. In the 80's Chichester had some great pubs, especially The Royal Arms Punch House which is now a bloody bank! Shows the sign of the times when it wasn't that long ago banks were being turned into pubs!!. Friday & Saturday nights were always a good pub crawl from the station all the way to The Vic in Eastgate. Seem to rember there being loads of fit women to.

Used to remember seeing Nicholas Lindhurst often drinking in The Nags. He used to wear the same clothes as his character, Rodney.

Don't go back there much now. Shame really, all the good shops are shut, rents too expensive and you'll never get a club there as the church owns most of Chichester. We had to make do with the god awful Thursdays half way to Bognor.

Has to be Bexhill-on-Sea for me. Has all the worst traits of East Grinstead & more. When the book 'Craptowns UK" was released, Bexhill charted at a respectable 8th worst place to live in the UK, being forced down into 8th by the likes of Luton, Hull, Paisley & Peterhead.

The town centre is a Ghost town of pound store's, second hand crap & Charity shops, frequented everywhere by chavs & 16 year old Mothers dressed in regulation attire. The few pubs are horrible, full of inbred knuckle draggers with murder in there eyes.

My brother has recently spent time living in Bexhill due to selling his house in London & waiting to complete on his new place. He stated he felt more threatened walking around Bexhill in the evening than he did in London, thanks to all the lowlife chavs that hang around the streets where they roll the pavements up at 5pm. This from somebody who lived in New Cross & Brixton for sixteen years!

Then there's the "God's waiting room brigade"? Plenty of Daily Mail devotee's in that town who resent outsiders & change. A town full of Victor Meldrews & Chavs. That's Bexhill these days.

I live in EG and have to agree with a lot of your comments, its very poor, but how many towns are in same state. However i picked my son up from station at EG after Charlton match and was pleasantly suprised about how many Brighton fans got off train, it has never been a Palace town although a few yes , considering how short a distance it is and a straight line , they are very poorly supported in town. At the local school more BHA fans and think that is a lot to do with Albion in the community and Albion coaching at EG sports club, if only we could hve direct line to Falmer !!!!!!!!!:falmer::falmer:

Seaford. Dire.

Seconded. How a backward inbred place like that hasn't been flattened for a giant car park for car manufacturers importing through Newhaven is beyond me.The webbed feet,one-eyed capital of the world. So bad,it's got 2 arseholefarms (golf clubs).

Is it really the highest church tower in the South East, or just that it stands on a hill so looks taller than it is?

As for West Hoathly? Also a nice enough village in the 60s now completely spoilt by the traffic that uses the road because there's no EG bypass. However the Cat Inn is great, although I heard recently taken over by the owners of Gravetye Manor (which I'm told has gone bust?). How is it under the new ownership? And I understand the Intrepid Fox (new name for the old Vinols Cross) owner has also sold up. Is the blue plaque still on the tree by the recreation ground to commemorate the fact that I played football for West Hoathly in the 60s???

I believe it's both with the church tower, and it's a very successful church - no empty pews there. As for West Hoathly, the village itself is fine, apart from some selfish parking, but the real problem is the through road, which as you say is crowded with traffic. Funnily enough though, most WH locals don't want the EG bypass; apparently some survey showed it would send even more traffic through the village; can't see how myself. I personally favoured the Southampton to Ashford motorway. Getting to Chichester or the far eastern part of Sussex from my area takes an absolute age, and far to much long distance traffic has to use the M25 as the south coast road is so bad. I can't say what the Cat is like. The previous owner was a bit of a snob. He was known not to like the locals and rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way. Mark Raffan should do well if he can sort his Gravetye problems out - I think he just over-extended himself and the banks pulled the plug. The owner of the Intrepid Fox had no personality, and should never have tried to run a pub. Don't know about your plaque I'm afraid.

the Base was the popular youth hangout in the town for many a year before it was replaced by Jumpin' Jax, then Billie Rox and now it is empty again as far as I can tell.

The Base used to attract a few decent bands, but that in turn meant that the dregs of Edenbridge, Crawley and South London would come down, leading to countless numbers of fights. Thankfully they then built Ikon and Diva in Crawley (previously it only had one very small discotheque on the Boulevard), which got rid of a lot of the trouble that used to occur. Bad as it was, locals used to stick to Martine's. I can remember in the 1990s being a cab driver. On a Sunday morning (I used to start at 4 am if there were runs to do), it would be just me and the glaziers repairing the damage from the night before out on the road.

Keith has retired, but Nicholas, his brother, is carrying it on (as far as I know - I hope so, as they are repairing a watch for me!!) Very good for wedding rings, anniversary jewellery, etc, and very long standing business - Jack, the uncle used to repair clocks for us. Keith used to run the West Hoathly drama group, the Stoneland Players, which my dad acted in, but that seems to have gone quiet as well.

Yeah - Keith is semi-retired, it is his eldest son that I am best man for. When Nicholas goes I think that will be it for the family business, whether everyone else will take it on? I think Keith still has plenty of plans for the players - my parents who are good friends with them keep me well informed on the Ashurst Wood grapevine

Hailsham is a grade 1 shit-hole as is Newhaven.

Oi, I live in that shit hole and although I will agree some parts are shit holes, some are nice. The same with East Grinstead, Uckfield etc.

BTW born in Hastings, lived mostly in Eastbourne, and Eastbourne has some pretty shit areas as well!!! Currently Hampden Park is as bad as any areas in Hailsham.

Surely for this thread to have any credibility it's my duty to mention that Littlehampton is easily the biggest shitehole in the universe , never mind Sussex? Worthing is a close second. Used to be a nice place but is now a chav infested hellhole.
Littlehampton is not the most desirable location on the Sussex Riviera but thats a bit harsh on poor old Worthing. Anyway Angmering-on-Sea is very nice ( a rose between two thorns ) even though Greg Stanley is a regular in the pubs down there.:guns:

For sheer wrist slitting misery I would go for Haywards Heath.

Just how many f***ing kebab shops can one pissant town support?

The locals are abunch of single issue Neo-nazis (Princess Royal Bleeding Hospital anyone?) and the pubs are RANK.

Another drinking establishment closed down in Haywards Heath. The last day for Bar Nun a.k.a the Priory restaurant - the one Gordon Ramsay featured on 'Kitchen nightmares'. Gone bust apparently. I used to work there and they were always doing cheap 2-for-1 offers, wasn't the manager a Palace fan?

Awful soulless town that gets worse, ok if you want a coffee, kebab or charity shop but apart from the Broadway there's nothing. It tries to be too middle-class.

In comparison, Burgess Hill is a lot better in so many ways.

Good comment accept the bit about Angmering On Sea ( of which there is no such place). It is actually East Preston.
As for Greg Stanley, he is a regular in the Tudor and Reema but everytime i see him he is very quiet.Have had a few run-ins with him over the years but nowadays seems no longer up for a scrap.:(

It is no loss Bar Nun closing as it was an awful bar more like a hotel bar than a pub.

Has the Tapas restaurant also closed. Despite what Gordon Ramsey said its best days were as a carvery but it wasnt VFM. The cost was about £14.95, but quite often they had a promotion of a 2nd meal for £ 1.00 but at £14,95 it was too expensive and not worth the price. The restaurant I liked in HH was the one that is now Blue India and did a very good steak.
