The reason I haven’t really bothered with the thread is because the bloke was a very divisive politician. Not my favourite person.

But yes, an assassination is always a shock. And not welcome in the 21st century.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm of the opinion that no serving or ex-politician deserves to be shot dead - regardless of their beliefs.

You don't need to know anything about his policies, leadership or legacy to say that this is a totally uncalled for and shocking attack.

RIP.

For those interested Abe was pretty right wing.

He had a lot of ties to nationalist groups, was very militaristic - continually pushing to get Japan's pacifist constitution revised so they could instigate war, would go to the controversial Yasukuni shrine (where a number of Japanese war criminals were buried) every year thus angering Japan's neighbours(in particular Korea and China), refused to accept let alone apologise for the 'comfort women'(or less euphemistically Korean and Chinese women forced into prostitution) Japan procured for it's military in WWII, destroyed the Japanese media and freedom of speech and got revised history text books into schools which didn't mention any of the shit done in Japan's name. He was also pretty corrupt and his government had plenty of scandals.

There's probably plenty of other stuff that he did that I've forgotten about or just plain passed me by.

I am of course not saying he deserved to be shot down in the street. I'm just giving a bit of info on the man and his policies.

It'll be interesting to see what the shooter's motives were. Abe was in power for 8 years. If the guy was pissed of with his policies I wonder why he waited until Abe had been out of power for two years before shooting him.

Thank you. It's always interesting to hear from somebody who is actually there.

Cheers, that was my my rough understanding of Abe from this side of the world. Like you say, it will be interesting to find out what the motives of the shooter were.

Might have thought it would be easier when he was out of power (less security)? And possibly thought he'd get a more lenient sentence than killing the guy currently in power, if/when caught?

For your first point I think that's a definite possibility. If you've seen any of the videos/photos of the incident you can see an old guy slowly cycling a few metres behind having a good look at what's going on as the security guards tackle the shooter. This is a fairly common situation, you can often see political speakers holding small rallies outside stations with disinterested pedestrians walking around them.

I don't know how senior the speakers are though, I would have thought that there would be greater security for the P.M and any senior politicians. But then I would have thought that for someone like Abe whether he was in power or not.

As for your second point, I'm not sure. Japan's quite hierarchical, they still have the death penalty and the shooter made no attempt to escape. Japan's justice system is unforgiving once you're in it. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
