Has anyone had them?

I think i may just need some information from people who have!

i basically cant walk futher than 20meters without my shin feeling brused and weak. im quite a aggresive walker(no i dont go around waving my fist and swearing) and play a fair amount of sport running etc!

Does anyone no how to ease them? thank you in advance

I don't think there is much you can do about this Mr Munkfish except let nature take its course.

They happen when you train too hard. How much running do you do and do you have decent running shoes?

If I dont stretch before exercise I get them.
The best stretch seems to be pointing my toes upwards towards my shin then following with down my foot to my ankle.
Also perch on the edge of a step, backwards, and slowly raise youself up on your toes and then down to below the level of the step.
I think once you've got them your stuck with them but I hope these stretches help a bit.

Munkfish, I had shin splints in my early 20's. Suffered for about 2 years in absolute f***ing agony. I did visit the doctor and there is basically f*** all that can be done about it other than resting. Make sure you put shock absorbing insoles in all your shoes & I found that ice packs helped ease the agony too.

I sympathise with you.

I struggled with a foot complaint for over a year, seeing various doctors and getting knowhere (plantar ficitus, which similarly to shin splints needs good old fashioned rest) Then I was recommended this woman, a single consultation, some footbeds for my shoes and a variety of stretching exercises and I was fixed within 2 months.

Painful horrible things shin splints!

I went through about 4 pairs of running shoes before I completely got rid of the pain...Just walking around town in some of my old trainers gave me agony!

Anyhow as people have said, you need to make sure your shoes are good enough - often its when your old shoes are getting past it and aren't giving you the protection they had when they were new from the pounding of the concrete. Basically there are two reasons for it, type of exercise, and the structure of your foot (ie if youre slightly flatfooted)...This web site explains about half way down under what causes it:

As has been mentioned they can get better over time. I suffered with them for a few years in my 20's, absolute agony walking anywhere. But I got better.

Falmer, soon...
Don't play footy on hard surfaces otherwise you'll be getting stress fractures. Done that myself and it is not good.

Two things you can do.

1) No high impact activity

2) place heel supports in your shoes to change the stress on your legs.
