Shift Workers - Could you ever go back to a 9-5?

I like 9-5, it kind of keeps me on the straight and narrow. It's like lifestyle management. No matter what I get up to at the weekend I am forced to sleep, eat and shit at sensible times during the week. And there something quite glorious about the Friday post-work pint.

I managed to get my London-based employer to allow me to work from home about 3 years ago. It was the best thing I ever did.

I go into London just twice a week for client meetings, and the rest of the time I work from my home office, which overlooks my garden, and the sea.

I would never to back to daily commuting, even if they tried to force me , or threatened to double my salary.

I'm the same. I go to the office every 3 weeks or so. Over the years I've really developed my home office as well. I'm quite happy beavering away in there with my music on. It's a total comfort zone with all mod-office-cons.

Monday - Friday 9am - 5.30pm.
We have flexitime though, so I usually build this up through the week and cop off early on a Friday, which is always nice.
It suits me down to the ground, as I know my weekends and evenings are always free. I'd love to spend a few days a week working from home though, saving the 19 mile drive up to Haywards Heath. Not an option so far though, sadly.

I work a 5 week cycle and that incorporates days/evenings/nights/weekends. I can honestly say that the week of straight days is the worst for me - that could aslo be due to the fact that I work from home a lot of the time but the straight day week I have to go from Eastbourne to Gatwick. I prefer the train but I get very pissed off having to stand between Gatwick and Lewes most days.
There's no way I could go back to a 9-5 job

i have never had a 9-5 job so it would be a bit strange to say the least,i often see the suited n booted and wonder how nice it would be doing regular hours and having the weekend off, then i think of what they have to go through day in day out sitting at a mind numbing computer screen waffling shyte all day...Oh hang about ,saying that half the posters are on here when they are at work so it cant be all that bad.

I did shifts for 25 yrs (railway).

Likewise only I've been doing it for 32 years now, I did allways wonder what it would be like doing a normal 9-5 mon-fri job and then when I had to do it for a couple of months last year I hated it. Ok it was nice having weekends off but I found I was getting nothing done during the week and everywhere was packed at the weekend but the thing I hated most was routine. Give me shift work anyday because allthough it can be frustrating having to work nights and weekends especially during the summer it does give me some quality free time during the week when every where is quiet and when I do get weekends off it's often up to 7 days at a time. One thing that has improved my shift work over the last couple of years is the railway finaly moving in to the modern times and actually giving us a day or 2 off between changing shifts rather than just the 8 hours we had to tolerate for years.

Nail on head for me. The mind-numbing, spirit crushing routine did for me, and the same faces in the same train seats morning after morning was too close to the original series of Reggie Perrin for comfort. Currently I do six days on - made up of two earlies, two lates and finally two nights after which I get four days off, and it suits just fine.

Right here, right now
I do 4 ten hour days 7am to 6pm - usually Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri - and I car share so I only drive two days a week which is good as its a 60-odd mile round trip between Eastbourne and Haywards Heath. It also means I am only ever one day from a day off - I have either just had one or I'm off the next day!

Been doing this shift for about a year now and I'm dreading them saying I have to go back to 9-5 which they will eventually, so I enjoy it while it lasts.

The thing that does it for me is the fact all my mates work 9-5 and when I have time off during the week there is no-one around to do anyhing with and when I am at work they are all out doing things.

I dont mind the early mornings its mainly the late nights that annoy me.

And the fact that we have the SHITTEST shift pattern ever, its a 12 week pattern and there are a couple of times hen I work 7 days, have one off, then work another 4 wihone off then another 6 and then a weekend off. It doesnt give you time to recover and do all the things you need to do in your life! Its also the randomness of the shifts that I dont like, one day I'll be doing a 10-7, then a 1.30-10.30, then a day off and a week of earlies which are 7-2.15.
