Aaaah I get you, one last lap before lights on, see what stragglers are left, time to be brave and ask every single woman in turn whether they want a dance or taxi home, you'll be asking for a look round the building that was once Chatanoogas next .............
You've got it !

Boring By Sea
I saw Captain Sensible live at The Pink Coconut. It was a crazy evening and I can't imagine he was ever invited again. 'Captain, I said wot! '

Lets not forget the 'Revolution'
It was either the Rev or Sherrys for us depending on how we felt at the time in the early 70s. I remember going out with a girl who worked behind the burger bar at The Rev and this got me and my mates plenty of burgers and chips throughout the nights. Got my brother a date with a go-go dancer there but he complained she was costing too much as she only drank brandy and babycham. When The Rev changed its name it was more Sherrys that we went to. These were the clubs (and others) that moulded my teenage and 20s years. Another part of my youth going.

In reality, meh, West Street needs redevelopment anyway.

Quite. The entire street looks like a total dump when you walk up it during the daytime (it's not much better at night but at least you can't see how shabby it is). It's like any street in any town where the main nightlife for the, er, younger generation is concentrated.

I lived in the Pink Coconut and Paradox at weekends ! Have fond memories of being in there in 1988 on the Saturday night the Albion secured promotion after beating Bristol Rovers and seeing most of the Albion team in there. The lads were on good form and I recall having a great chat with Keith Dublin and seeing a totally hammered Gary Chivers take a tumble down the stairs and bouncing straight back up again ! Great times

The Paradox will always hold a special place in my 1990's nightclubbing memories, as I once got thrown out of there and The Event on the same night. :lolol:

Would have prefered to have been chucked out of the Event deux. Those stairs in the Para, Para, Paradox!

It would have been 'The Event 2'. The stairs in the Paradox were not my problem the night I got thrown out. I was taken out the back and down a fire escape and escorted round back onto West Street. I then went over the road, got in and got removed from there about 20 minutes later.

Built in 1867
The Ritz Roller Rink in the background started life as the West Street Concert Hall and was built in 1867 for a Mr William Child, with a white stucco facade four-stories high and designed in the Italianate style, similar to the Grand and Norfolk Hotels nearby.

In 1872 the building was hired by the British Geographical section, at which the explorer and missionary H. M. Stanley, who found Dr Livingstone in Africa, read a paper on his discoveries in Northern Tanganyika.

Fire in 1882
A disastrous fire seriously damaged the hall in 1882. It was later to reopen as an ice skating rink in 1892. Seventeen years later the hall took the legendary name of "Sherry's", beginning its long career as a Brighton's premier "Palais De Dance" venue. The height of its popularity came during the Second World War when service men would make a bee line for the venue, making "Sherry's" the Mecca of dancing on the south coast.

Dancing in the 40s and 50s
The atmosphere at the dance hall on any Saturday evening during the 40's and 50's was heightened for many of its patrons by its associations with Brighton's underworld of crime and gangsterism. The whole Brighton underworld scene was to be eventually immortalised by Graham Greene in his novel "Brighton Rock" of which "Sherry's" certainly played an active part!

Ritz Roller Rink
The building eventually became a roller rink (Ritz Roller Rink) in the mid fifties and remained so for many years, finally turning full circle, the venue is now a night club and dance venue once again!

So from the Event you ended up under the Kings Road and next to the pebbles? Some of the doormen prefered that particular exit.

No, sadly I was removed via the front door. I never had the pleasure of being thrown out the Event underneath Kings Road. I used to work with someone who had the experience of ending up on the beach having been removed that way though. He lived in Worthing and he was so inebriated that he actually thought he was somehow in Worthing due to the proximity of the beach for a few minutes afterwards.

I was a regular at pink coconut/paradox I genuinely can't remember seeing a single fight in there.

Did you ever recall hearing the phrase (announced by the DJ) "Dick Slater to the top bar/dance/floor/toilets" etc? if you did there was a fight somewhere.....code for the bouncers to respond
