So if we stopped using oil our entire economy would collapse?

No, thought not.
Unfortunately, it might not collapse but it would take serious damage.

Remember Shell and BP make most of their money from non-UK investments, so there is very little exposed to North Sea Windfall taxes But does impact FTSE based investments. What we need is their investment into British R&D / engineering companies to get us ahead of the new energy models (whether renewables, ammonia, hydrogen). If we don’t the investment by say the likes of Aramco / SOCAR could see that IP go elsewhere. The amount Big Oil invests in new projects is phenomenal and has huge risks with it - and it is a huge part of the UK economy. most people think oil&gas = Aberdeen and this isn’t totally true the likes of Wood (incl the old Amex Foster Wheeler), KBR (Kellogg Brown & Root), Fluor, Worley, Acer, Bechtel, Technip are huge employers all based in / around London of well paid professional engineers etc in the UK who earn good money and pay taxes which = paying for the NHS.

Centrica is different as every knows it owns British Gas (the supplier of gas) - what it doesn’t own was most of the oil and gas fields around the globe as they went to BG Group when the original British Gas split in two, BG group was subsequently bought by Shell.

I don’t understand your comment. Enlighten me as to how the economy would function without oil.
Other things would take its place. The only reason pension funds etc invest in oil is because its profitable. If renewables and so on mean we have no use for oil in future, they would invest elsewhere. Its not bringing the economy down is it.
