a) Go through the middle of the night
b) Drive at 150mph on the few occassions that the road is clear.

If you haven't done the A1 before, I'd seriously recommend it as it avoids all the major cities.

i always use the A1 when travelling south and back, now with the major junction improvements completed between Peterborough and Blyth (Notts) it is a lot easier . I have managed Haywards Heath to my house in 3.5 hours, but that was leaving at 6am on a Sunday
