NSC is by far the most religiously intolerant website I visit. Really offensive stuff at times.

To each his own, live and let live etc, please.

We threw off the shackles of organized religion not very long ago. Before that our forefathers were oppressed by organized religion. There wasnt much 'live and let live' from the church, particularly if you were female. The church was influential in shaping law (and it could be argued it still is via the Bishops in the House of Lords). The religious intolerance you detect is a determination not to allow such people back into public life. This is a tolerant, secular society and a lot of the freedoms you enjoy were won despite opposition from organized religion.

Fair play friend I just can't get my head around this stuff. Each to their own as they say :)
But you don't have to get your head around anything.
All you have to do is accept the decision a complete strange has made about his future.

I wouldn't have thought that would be too difficult.

Can I have communion waffles rather than 'Pringles' for this one?

I am envious of people whose life is enhanced by religion. I have no faith but it seems to make a lot of people happy. What harm has religious belief ever done?

Some people treat football as some sort of religion...would you like that banned too?

This.

If we're banning religion based on people being harmed and killed, you could make an argument for football going the same way as people around the world are regularly killed or injured as a result of football violence.

Not that I agree with banning either of them but just saying.

you aren't seriously comparing the deaths from football violence to those caused by religion around the world?? they are in different leagues..

Why should devotion to a religion prevent you from being a sportsman? Think Mushtaq, Eric Liddell, Moeen Ali and Billy Lane.
With his name, one guesses that Helan is a convert.

Why?[/QUOTE

A key reason is that it differentiates; once you have differentiation you have prejudice. We have enough differentiation that leads to prejudice - gender, race - without adding another. Examples: Sunni and Shia - Iraq v Iran; Christianity in ISIS controlled areas (or see http://www.theguardian.com/world/ng...the-world-is-it-worst-place-to-be-a-christian for other examples). Catholocism in England in Tudor times.

It is of course not religion per se that is the problem. True believers in most religions espouse epace and reconciliation; problem is religion gets hijacked by those who seek differentiation and conflict.

Is it no coincidence that the ten least religious countries in the world - see http://www.worldatlas.com/articles/least-religious-countries-in-the-world.html - have virtually no conflicts? (OK China has issues with Tibet but that is not a religious issue, and in Xinjiang, which is but sort of proves the point).

Religion was a way of controlling peasants before police forces etc. Scaring peasants to do right, not because they would be caught but because they would all ways being watched!!

Why religion is still in today's society shows how engrained these myths, stories became engrossed in our culture. However in the 21st century I am surprised some still believe in far fatched stories with no evidence in the face of modern science!!!

One of the modern world's big downfalls is the inability of humans to engage with things they don't agree with. Non-believers say that people with any affiliation with religion = unenlightened and possibly extremist. I am still undecided about it all but have worked for the church for many years. Possibly agnostic, possibly atheist. However, I now despise the latter term as it evokes images of Ricky Gervais gurning away on social media, mocking anyone who dares to have a different opinion or faith to him. I think most people would be amazed if they ever actually talked to a priest, they seem (at least to me) to be very normal people.

Come again? Do you seriously believe in that story? No disrespect to a fellow Brighton fan but come on?

No disrespect??? The first three replies you made on this thread were nothing but disrespectful. You're a ****ing idiot.

On a personal level, I don't find it necessary to subscribe to a particular dogma. I'm just a nice bloke. 'Do as you would be done by' from Charles Kingsley' s 'The Water Babies' is probably the closest I'll have to a credo. The 10 commandments avoid 'Thou shalt not commit genocide' and 'Thou shalt not murder innocent children' but the OT cracks on with that quite merrily in the name of 'Him'.

Religion, whatever gets you through the night.

THE ONE COMMANDMENT: Don't be a CJTC.

I too came to believe in Christ later in life, (I was 41), but that was my choice, nobody elses. I certainly don't condemn those that don't have a faith.

It's all about freedom of choice as I see it.

There is nothing wrong with religion. Its people who pervert the message wrongly that causes damage.

If people believe there maybe something else when your body dies, rather than just being a meal for insects, then I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yep. It would be a boring world if we all thought the same.
