As I read the Sheffield fans site the booing of Mitoma was about their view of his falling in the penalty area not a response to the red card. Virtually all their fans comments are incensed anger against Colgate for his stupidity and all agree it was a red
Except they were booing him before the 'penalty' incident. And they all completely stopped booing him after half-time, when they had presumably seen the Holgate assault on the concourse screens.

The players knew and it just shows you how thick Holgate must be to plead innocence. I have never seen Dunk so incensed. Players used to routinely surround the ref at incidents like that but not so much lately. Our players were all in uproar, it wasn’t orchestrated like in the past. They knew, he knew and tbf I don’t think Atwell had a good view and like a previous poster said, the Lino bottled it.

Also why does Holgate auto-correct to Colgate :D

I forgot to say this on Sunday, but I hope the opportunity wasn’t wasted on Sunday to sing the classic ‘you’ve seen the Albion now f*ck off home’ when the Sheffield United fans were streaming out mid way through the game.

Apparently Holgate received racist abuse after the game... suspect from the pleasant Sheffieldites (can't believe any of us would - or at the very least, hope not):

Looking at the messages he’s posted - the names suggest the abuse is nearly all from Asians (Vietnamese, Singaporean, and Japanese)

I always wonder if these posts are driven in part by the gambling that takes place on Premier Leagues games. Not all of it of course but when a youth from Gateshead gets caught for abusing Toney when he scored against us I thought WTF!

Not that it explains or excuses the nature of these posts, I think there's a lot of this in the tone of most post match posting and chat in general.
I've met people (not at Brighton games) absolutely furious that "their team" had only been winning by 3 goals because they had money on them scoring 4.

Social media is the wild west unfortunately - most of (not all of course but the majority of) racism online comes from abroad - impossible to control from here! A lot of racism still exists in many Asian countries unfortunately. Having spent a lot of time in China and Japan working not so long ago it was quite eye-opening at times, sadly

One of the impacts of VAR is that it has lessened the responsibilities of Assistant Refereees. They seem happy not to give advice to the referee and rely on VAR to correct errors. The assistant had a good view of the height and speed of the impact from behind but as far as I could see offered no insight to help the referee.
VAR appears to have, unintentionally or otherwise, moved on because as opposed to the VAR officials being there to support the on-pitch officials the game is now refereed by VAR. The on-pitch officials are now all 'assistant referees', they deal with the minor stuff but they let VAR make all the big decisions, and they go with it, even when it's wrong.

Holgate's yellow card was a classic example. It let the real ref know that there was an infringement, then whilst there was the usual argy bargy amongst the players the real ref was able to analyse the action and tell the (chief) assistant ref on the pitch what the correct decision should be. And at least it was right, unlike that red card we should have against Liverpool last year (can't remember the players involved). It's now a bit like the bunker review in rugby. And they can formalise and speed the process up by dropping the farce of having the on-field referee go to a monitor. (How many times has a referee been called to the monitor and then kept his original decision?)

Wasn't attwell called to the monitor for their disallowed goal?
I think it was to change from foul on the keeper to offside though.

Not really sure why he had to go to the monitor for that though.

Fabinho, studs up on Evan Ferguson's achilles tendon.

And yet VAR missed it. I don't think it was really subjective. It was a clear 2 handed shove in the back!

As for their disallowed goal, i am not entirely sure i understand why that wasnt given either.
I think he was called to the monitor because it was subjective. That is - was the touch by Buanonotte a deliberate act or merely a deflection.
