Another vote for Familys on the Isle of Wight. When our kids were young it was a regular leave work early friday and arrive in plenty of time for dinner. Leave IOW early Monday morning and be back at work for mid morning. The kids liked it so much they chose IOW over Disney World when they were a bit older.

Love Bigbury and that whole South Hams area of Devon. Never been to that part of Wales but would love to.

From experience the Lleyn Peninsular in North Wales was very nice, near to quite a few steam trains and the wonderfully eccentric Portmerion. Love the bottom right hand corner of Cornwall, the Rame Peninsular with the lovely twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, Mount Edgecumbe Country Park and the magnificent sweep of Whitsand Bay.

West Dorset is great. Chesil Beach all the way up to West Bay and Lyme Regis.

Also north Cornwall around Padstow (Padstein!) plus great beaches, and if it rains, the Eden Project is a great half day.

Can't go wrong with the Isle of Wight. Take the car over, hire a static caravan on a Haven campsite. Nothing is more than about 45 minutes drive away, loads of attractions for the kids, nice beaches, lovely villages, a different day out every day. Then back to the site, park the car by the caravan and off to the evenings entertainment and a few beers.

Not done it for a while, but I genuinely miss it now mine are a bit more grown up. Nowadays "its not a holiday if we don't get on a plane"
