The best lyricists I've heard are Jackson Browne, Bruce Cockburn and Dylan. However, none of them have surpassed this snippet of pop culture from Jonathan Richman's Rock 'n' roll drummer:-

There he is in France,
In his stinking underpants..........

Has this gem ever been surpassed?
Anyone who can rhyme France with pants has gotta be a genius.

I cry my tears
But they're not for you
Playing a game
I know you've done too
I shouldn't have waited,
But still it's all the same
Cause you know,
I'm just playing my game.

- Lene Marlin, Playing my Game.

You’ll like this one Binney on acid and I don’t need to tell you whose lyrics they are

Dancing our sorrow away
Right on dancing
No matter what fate chooses to play (There's nothing you can do about it anyway)
Just do the steps that you've been shown
By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Another's steps have grown
In the end, there is one dance you'll do alone

And these from Robert Zimmerman are my all time favourite

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

In a pile of football shirts
I'll give you two:

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight,
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude...

and

Once I had my own mind but in your sewer, I was blinded
Wallowing around like an albino crocodile
In puppet life

Love is just another diagnosis
Like bacterial vaginosis
Once you're in it, you're committed
To everything that you've transmitted

Love is just another diagnosis
Like chicken pox, swine flu, streptococcus
Walking pneumonia, mumps, herpes, hepatitis
Syphilis, tetanus, human papillomavirus

'A Better Hair Cut' from the mursical 'Amelie'.

So many from EC

I don’t know if you’re loving somebody, I only know it isn’t mine(Alison)

They call her Natasha but she looks like Elsie(I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea)

My fave though

When England was the whore of the world, Margaret was her madam,
And the future looked as bright and as clear as the black tar-macadam(Tramp The Dirt Down)

“When I get older losing my hair, many years from now. Will you still be sending me a Valentine, birthday greetings bottle of wine?” The Beatles

"What chance have you got against a tie and a crest?" The Jam

"The ice age is coming, the sun’s zooming in. Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin. A nuclear error, but I have no fear ‘cause London is drowning, and I live by the river" The Clash

"Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want. So tell me what you want, what you really, really want" Spice Girls

Well, I've got a book of Mark Kozelek lyrics I could quote all day, but for lovelorn lyrics how about:

I wanted you to sleep with her and hate yourself instead of me, by Kristin Hersh

Or

Watching you walk back to your car was the lowest point of my life so far, by the incomparable David Lewis Hedge.

Well Eddie Grace's Buick got four bullet holes in the side
And Charlie DeLisle is sittin' at the top of an avocado tree
Mrs. Storm will stab you with a steak knife, if you step on her lawn
I got a half a pack of Lucky Strikes, man, so come along with me
Let's fill our pockets with macadamia nuts
And go over to Bobby Goodmanson's and jump off the roof

Well Hilda plays strip poker with the Mummers 'cross the street
Joey Navinski says she put her tongue in his mouth
And Dicky Faulkner's got a switchblade and some gooseneck risers
That eucalyptus is a hunchback, there's a wind down from the south
So let me tie you up with kite string, I'll show you the scabs on my knee
Watch out for the broken glass, put your shoes and socks on
And come along with me

Let's follow that fire truck, I think your house is burnin' down
And go down to the hobo jungle and kill some rattlesnakes with a trowel
And we'll break all the windows in the old Anderson place
We'll steal a bunch of boysenberries and I'll smear 'em on your face
I'll get a dollar from my mama's purse and buy that skull and crossbones ring
And you can wear it round your neck on an old piece of string

Then we'll spit on Ronnie Arnold and flip him the bird
And slash the tires on the school bus, now don't say a word
I'll take a rusty nail and scratch your initials in my arm
And I'll show you how to sneak up on the roof of the drugstore
I'll take the spokes from your wheelchair and a magpie's wings
And I'll tie 'em to your shoulders and your feet
I'll steal a hacksaw from my dad and cut the braces off your legs
And we'll bury them tonight out in the cornfield
Just put a church key in your pocket, we'll hop that freight train in the hall
We'll slide all the way down the drain to New Orleans in the fall

I'm not sure I have ever heard any lyrics with you (tish boom) but this springs instantly to mind:

Stained glass windows keep the cold outside
While the hypocrites hide inside
With the lies of statues in their minds
Where the Christian religion made them blind
Where they hide
And prey to the God of a bitch spelled backwards is dog
Not for one race, one creed, one world
But for money
Effective
Absurd
Do you pray to the Holy Ghost when you suck your host
Do you read who's dead in the Irish Post
Do you give away the cash you can't afford
On bended knees and pray to lord
Fat pig priest
Sanctimonious smiles
He takes the money
You take the lies
This is religion and Jesus Christ
This is religion cheaply priced
This is bibles full of libel
This is sin in eternal hymn
This is what they've done
This is your religion
The apostles were eleven
Now there's a sod in Heaven
This is religion
There's a liar on the altar
The sermon never falter
This is religion
Your religion

And this has been one of my lockdown go to ditties:

I am nothing.
I'll never be anything.
I couldn't want to be something...
...I have in me all the dreams in the world.

You are nothing.

Last one:

Che, Che
Well, alright
Came to say
Let's all pray
Hurray, hurray
Che, Che
He's wearing a red star
Smoking his cigar
And when he died
The whole world lied
They said he was a saint
But I know he ain't

Fountains of Sorrow by Jackson Browne. Astonishing to have the presence of mind to write such poetic words about relationships at the age of I think 23? Astonishing.

The opening verse:

Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer
I was taken by a photograph of you
There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true
You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes

Worthing
The greatest lyric in modern music history.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you,

Little does she know, by the Kursaal Flyers.

Little does she know that I know that she knows
That I know she's two-timin' me
Little does she know that I know that she knows
That I know she's cheatin' on me
I was outside the one stop
When I saw her in the corner
And I didn't like what I see
Little does she know that I know that she knows
That I know she's two-timin' me
She was sharing her spin dryer with a guy in a tie-dye
When she saw my reflection in the chrome
I knew that she'd seen me 'cause she dropped her bikini
The one that I got her, in Rome
Little does she know that I know that she knows
That I know she's two-timin' me
Little does she know that I know that she knows
That I know she's cheatin' on me
When she finished her laundry she was all in a quandary
And made it for the street like a hare
Her escape was so urgent, she forgot her detergent
And dropped all her clean underwear
Little does she know that I know that she knows
That I know she's cheatin' on me

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fullfil the book
