[Football] Shaqiri - Deal of the day

There's this new thing in the modern game called squad rotation. It's important when you have a full premier league season plus all the cups including your priority, the champions league. Factor in things like the african cup of nations, South American players with huge round trips during the internationals and it's not so hard to see how someone of his quality would still play 20odd games. He is young and a match winner. It's a steal.

His wages will be north of £100K a week and signing on fees to the agent will have been eye watering.

The transfer fee only tells half the story these days.

Good signing ... yes

Deal of the day/close season etc ... no.

Yes the fee may have been low because of the release clause but as has been said the signing on fee plus wages with have added ££££££ to the value of the deal.

Can’t imagine his agent will have left any money on the table with such a low fee

Ideal in the lesser games and will do much better in a team with better players and more of the ball. Can't see him being picked to start against the top sides in CL or games like the Citeh ones though.

A PL game changer for £13.75m is good business. Adding to squad depth and cover for African Nations Cup as someone else said.

Only rich ManU and ManC have 22 truly first team quality players, which takes them over the line in winning things.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs are having to be more financially shrewd in improving theirs.

Liverpool have spent nearly 200 million pounds on players this calendar year so far.

It takes £800m to £850m, with more to come in the next month by ManU and ManC, to attain their 22 trophy winning players. An injury to a first teamer, simply means that another quality player seemlessly replaces them.

The other clubs spend big too, but will need to clever in other ways.

He’ll be on the bench too. Don’t forget that they’ve just spent close to 100 million on Fabinho and Keita - who will most likely start in the middle alongside Henderson. Salah, Mane and Firmino have all earned their spots. Shaqiri will be competing for the spots on the bench with Milner, Lallana and Ox

Yea I think you are right but maybe one fit player out of the two...meant Chamberlain obvs but you knew that :). Ox went to Liverpool because he didnt like being on the bench...

They've also received about £150 million back from the Coutinho sale though (who presumably Shakiri is the effective replacement for)
Not really a replacement; they play in different positions. Coutinho played as part of a midfield three whereas Shakiri is a winger. Plus Coutinho was clearly in Liverpool’s best XI. I’d be surprised if Shakiri doesn’t have the majority of his starts this season in the League and FA Cups.

Man City only named 18 players in their squad last Feb.

Good job he's cost less than 10% of the Coutinho fee then! I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on Liverpool, but I'm fairly sure Coutinho played quite a lot of games as a 'wandering' winger, so they're not totally incomparable.

Coutinho is the best player that I have ever seen live against the Albion, although Shaqiri is an excellent player he is nowhere near the class of Coutinho imo. Coutinho was one of the first names on the team sheet, Shaqiri will do very well to be as important to Liverpool, again imo.
