In terms of the % we have double the death rate of the USA. As an island, we should have had an advantage. We had every early warning sign from Italy and Spain as to what was sweeping the continent, yet we didn't close borders. We didn't test arriving passengers at airports, or impose quarantine. We didn't roll out widespread testing, which in turn meant we couldn't track and trace. We didn't initiate a lockdown until 2 months after the virus was here. We sent untested patients from hospitals straight into care homes to free up beds, resulting in thousands of deaths amongst our most vulnerable. We returned KNOWN covid patients back into care homes to free up beds (whilst Nightingale hospitals laid empty). We failed to provide frontline NHS staff with adequate PPE, which has directly resulted in deaths.

The list goes on, and I'm sure I've barely covered it. But when this crisis has passed, and an Inquiry is held into the handling of it by our nations leaders....oh boy.

I agree with all of that. I just don’t think the USA is a good comparison because of population density. I’m sure when compared to comparable countries we will not look good at all. I believe some of the press across Europe has been very critical of us. In particular the Italian press can’t believe that we didn’t learn from what was happening there.

I find it very amusing that constant negativity and whining to undermine our government by militant infiltrated NSC & the boring leftie BBC & yet to hear any of you saying anything positive and supportive of all the efforts that the government have made and continue to make to protect us. As a father, I would have had no qualms in resorting to the same action under similar circumstances and using common sense to protect my very young child by turning to my family for help. Stop trying to score pathetic political points during this national emergency when we should all be working together. The sensible general public understand his motives, so this does not undermine the governments guidance. Grow up and stop sniping all of you - soo boring.

The media, SNP and others are appalling and make me sick and tired of hearing their constant negativity and whining to undermine our government and this is a typical of their political rhetoric. I’m yet to hear any of them saying anything positive and supportive of all the efforts that the government have made and continue to make to protect us. As a father, I would have had no qualms in resorting to the same action under similar circumstances and using common sense to protect my very young child by turning to my family for help. Nothing wrong with turning to your family for help. What was wrong with all the family he and his wife have in London? Why did he return again and have a day out for his wife's birthday?

Hard to argue with any of that. Here we have around 25 million people, and 102 deaths so far. What made the difference? Closed borders and big fines for breaking the rules.

And if you rely on self isolation by those arriving from overseas then you are deluding yourself, it does not work. It has to be enforced.

Yup, you're spot on. I'm partisan, and entirely comfortable with justifying my position, which is normally against the Tories. But I've never known such a despised decision that has more-or-less united the whole country against this lot. They won't survive this.
We need a national government to see us through this desperate situation.
We need a full, rapid, thorough, frank public enquiry put in place.
And then we need a general election, and get these shysters out of our lives. Enough of their Etonian games with the public.

Couldn't we just do an exhange with New Zealand ? Their government comes here for five years and our clowns go there.

So boring reading about the left wing enclave of Brighton & Islington. Outside your little world in Sussex - true blue we all think Boris & co are doing a pretty decent job in difficult times.

Where’s your useless Kyle (always backs the wrong horse), the Greeny MP & the whiny thing from East Brighton? Probably all bunkered down in a North Laine Cafe planning their next moan - losers.

careful you don't choke on bungle's willy!

After the furlough scheme etc which has kept me job, I was supportive of the Governments approach, but after this, which has saved millions of people, I now feel ashamed.

I'm trying to be supportive but I just can't.

They've been a disgrace ever since, bar our Chancellor. It's been about the economy from day one, not about lives. I supported Johnson through this, even as an anti Tory voter, because I thought he had a tough job on his hands, but now I feel he's gone too far and now the Government have been exposed for the ineptitude on a huge level for this whole crisis and yet they still try to defend the indefensible and still don't answer questions properly, Gove I'm talking to you re schools being safe and I could go on. This is now a case of feeling shameful.

I hate the Mail, but even they for the first time ever, know this is a shitty move to say the least.

Hang on, you're OK with Sunak? Wasn't he parachuted in to do Cummings' bidding because Sajid David wouldn't put up with it?

I was willing to give the government the benefit of the doubt over PPE and then again with the care home mistakes - after all, we've not had a pandemic for over 100 years and there hasn't been a government in the world that has got it's reaction to this perfectly correct.

This is different. This is a 'man' that has helped formulate the rules we're expected to follow. If anyone should know what they are it's him. He broke those rules. Rules that have meamt many people sacrificing things - in some cases their lives. He has all the forces of government at his finger tips to get anything he needs. Yet he was unable to get local childcare ?? Remember he has two family members very close by in London. So instead he travels hundreds of miles knowing he and his wife are a risk. What kind of selfish cvnt WILLINGLY risks giving his parents a deadly virus ??

All Johnson had to do was fire him. Cummings has fired other government advisors for no reason whatsoever so Johnson shouldn't have been worried in doing so. I suspect Johnson authorised the trip. Johnson would probably have then be able to ride out the storm. Instead he's made even ardent supporters of the lockdown like me question if I should bother. Fvck it - when I go shopping this week I'm not going to queue - why should I ? Lockdown's over.

PS - and before you accuse me of being some liberal leftie - I voted for this mob .... shamefully.

So you're admitting that you are as selfish and arrogant a hypocritical asshole as he is, rubbishing all the sacrifices that so many people have made, some of them heart breaking. This is not about pathetic political points. It is about a situation where significant numbers of his own party are turning against him. Your feeble effort at trolling, or is it a real total selfish disregard for the common good, is pathetic.

Easy-and-delicious-home-made-crumpets.jpg

Authentic English Crumpets Recipe:

Ingredients:

2 ½ tsp dried yeast
warm 240ml milk

2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
2 tsp sea salt
2 tsp caster sugar
470g plain flour
½ tsp baking powder dissolved in 60ml warm water
vegetable oil, to grease
butter or cheese, to serve

Method:

1. In a bowl stir together the yeast and 240ml warm water and let it stand for 5-10 mins. Add the warm milk, butter, salt and sugar. Add the flour and stir until the batter becomes smooth. Let stand for 30 mins.

2. Stir in the baking powder dissolved in water, leave to rise for 20-30 mins.

3. Grease a heavy-based frying pan with a little vegetable oil and heat over medium-low heat. Lightly grease 4 x 9cm diameter crumpet rings. Spoon batter into the rings so it comes halfway up the sides. Reduce heat to low, cover with an upturned deep frying pan to give the crumpets space to rise. Cook until the tops look dry, about 10-12 mins.

4. Flip them over and cook for 5 mins until golden and firm. Repeat with the remaining batter. Serve toasted with butter or with cheese melted under the grill.

1. So many people against him that he was elected leader of his party, AND of the country, despite having a track record that makes this latest escapade look like a mere oversight.

2. I think that horse bolted a while back unfortunately. Anyone 'staying alert' would have noticed that already.

1. He was elected leader of his party and then PM six months ago. We are talking - or at least most of us are - about the here and now. Do try and keep up!

2. If that horse had already bolted - which it hadn't completely - he has just given it a lift in a high speed horsebox to wherever it wants to go.

I would say the NSC is a pretty broad church and the bulk of comments on this thread reflect the views of the country at large. To criticise Cummings behaviour is not “militant” or “leftie”, it is just frustrated people faced with hypocrisy.

I think you will find it is your views in the minority and the majority of the “sensible general public” do not agree with you.

You seem to be the right wing version of Jolly Red Giant.
