Why would an actor apologise for ACTING?

I know why, because the mob of snowflakes on Twitter have been after him, couldn’t care less if he wants to apologise but it’s obvious why he wants to apologise, I was reading a thread on Twitter yesterday with people complaining about a straight actor playing a gay character on screen, it’s the definition of acting. I just don’t get it, if someone is right for the part they are right for the part

What campaign? In the article you posted it mentions a documentary made by an Indian-American and then goes on to talk about Azaria doing his own research, speaking to Indian people, going to seminars etc. and coming to a decision.

None of that strikes me as snowflakey, rather the actions of an adult doing his research and making a choice.

For what it's worth, I don't think he needed to apologise either. Apu is one of the best characters on the show. But I'm neither Indian nor Hank Azaria and so my opinion is irrelevant.

This.

There are things worth getting outraged about but this isn't one. Bit surprised at the OP on this occasion

I know your NSC persona is now you trying very hard to be edgy but it would help if you had any kind of basic understanding of the topic at hand.

Another 'this'.

Never ceases to amaze me how people can get so angry about stuff which doesn't matter

And... if you tolerate this, then your South Park / Family Guy will be next, will be next, will be next...

You think because he has said that it’s true? He played Apu for 25 odd years, he’s hardly going to come out and say ‘I’m apologising because of the Twitter mob’ is he

I would suggest you aren’t aware of the campaign on Twitter against him, since the voice actor for Cleveland on Family Guy left his role and numerous others, there has been an increasing witch hunt on social media for minority characters voiced by white actors, I couldn’t care less who acts roles out on screen myself, actors are actors, if you pigeon hole an actor into only being able to play his own race/sex/religion etc you are cutting yourself out of a lot of potential roles.

It does matter. This "cultural appropriation" thing is all about segregation and apartheid, and I have no idea why supposed anti-racists are getting involved. The idea that only black people can play black people and only white people can play white people, is pernicious and absurd. I saw Othello at the Globe a couple of years back; obviously Othello himself was played by a black man, but so were several other parts. And why should it not be? Why should people be barred from playing Shakespeare just because they are black? Or because they are white? Or any other colour?

Culture is for us all. The idea that only white people should play classical music and only black people should play reggae? It's worse than stupid. It's dangerous.

No, you're right. Far better to believe what you've made up.

It’s amusing and quite naive that you think that actors aren’t being forced to apologise for fear of the social media mob, are you a regular user of Twitter? If you are, I suggest you look at the vitriol that gets aimed at these actors who portray characters of different ethnicities, look how many people have been forced out of roles in recent years.

Should gay actors only be allowed to play gay characters? Should white characters like James Bond, only be played by white men?

Why? We're heading towards Sharia Law Lite shirley. Corporations crumble and Governments change track in the face of some hard-of-thinking millenium lynch mob who will most likely flit to some other pretend outrage target overnight just because they got the app and the text chars to do so

The Simpsons: Hank Azaria apologises for voicing Indian character Apu

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-56731420

Next thing snowflakes will be only too happy to let the twitterworld know that Groundskeeper Willie is the victim of Highlander cultural misappropriation. Or that Homer is being Fat-Shamed. Or maybe just grow a pair FFS? F*cking millenial crybabies
Sadly, some on here will argue that he should feel guilty and ashamed. I see some have arrived already. Shame.

Now perhaps they can turn their valuable attention for Dick van Dyke's complete disrespect for cockneys............ now that really was offensive.

I believe actors should be able to play any role that they feel they can do justice to. However, there’s no point getting all worked up about it. No point having some opposing movement. It’s all just a bit of an overreaction and it’ll pass.
The anti-PC mob love a good outrage. Grrrrrrr!

It's a tribute to the success of the Simpsons that it has lasted so long that it completely overlaps cultural epochs and what is deemed acceptable and it's a tribute to Azaria that he's realised this, apologised and moved on.

OK, so the actor who apologised was lying. I believe you.

Look you are conflating lots of things. Of course I know about pressure from people via social media. I know all about Trained Socialists and the pressure group Black Lives Matter. I know that there are mobs who think black people can play white people but white people can't play black people. I also recall a large number of other events, TV sit coms etc., dripping with casual and not-so-casual racism which I won't bother invoking since, like everything you mention, it is irrelevant whataboutery.

I try to avoid falling into the trap of conflation and lazy pattern regnition.

And of course I'm not a regular user of twitter :lolol:

Anyway....boo to social media. BOO!
