Used to go there with the boys from Burgess Hill, always a good stopping off point during a night out in town!

Is it my beer addled memory, or back then, did they sell pints of slops, basically the overruns from pints of real ale?

No. :lolol:

Ullage, it was called...

The Royal Pavilion is shutting, making way for apartments.

Starting in 1982 for me (when underage) Shades was always the first port of call in a pub crawl with mates ending in West Street / seafront nightclubs. The first 4 pints downed very quickly in Shades, before moving on westwards. Just 90 pence a pint of lager or snakebite in 1982!

We started off in Shades literally 100’s of times, stretching into the 90’s.

In the 80’s (before a refit) Shades was the wine bar part in a dark corner, selling cheap wines such as Muscadet and Lambrusco, as well as ice cold bottled Tuborg and Grolsch.

Nostalgia.

A shame really.

I’m guessing 70’s for me Westie

Similar good memories of Pav tav/Shades in the mid/late 80's, but having dropped by earlier this year at 10pm on Saturday, i can say it's a complete khazi now, with 10 people in it..

Sometimes a detour to Fagan’s Wine Bar at the bottom of East Street in the mid 80’s.

Kicking off my evening in the Pav Tav in the late 80’s and early 90’s with my mates was the unwritten rule, while Fagans wine bar was frequently our next stop. Absolutely loved it in both places. Great times & great memories.

Crikey. I worked behind the bar there from June 1979 till Feb 1980. Had my encounter with Lawro ("ere chief, got change for the cigarette machine") there. Shared bar duties with John (Aden) Gillett (funny guy). Happy days! And blimey did we tuck it away - 3 pints at lunchtime and another 5 in the evening. For the protein, obviously.

Did you IGNORE anyone waiting to be served ???

I’d love to live all that over again (at that age). :)

Mmmm....fun times, but I was mostly working (in the bar). :lolol:

When I got a spare moment I was in the Basement (poly) Buccaneer and Alhambra.

By the time you were cruising, I'd moved to London then to Vancouver (82).

I still feel like my yoof was stolen from me by leaving Brighton...and my Brighton roots, but mustn't complain...things worked out :lolol:

Last time I was in there was late night after the 1:1 draw with Villa 4 years ago. Bouncers tried to stop me because i was wearing a Brighton shirt.

Me too ! Part of me would have liked to have had mobile phones around then to capture some crazy & funny nights on camera - but then again, good job they weren’t !

:lolol:

Also of lads holidays abroad and weekend trips to other UK cities. Priceless.

But at least we talked with mates, and sometimes the opposite gender.

Not staring into little screens.

Sadly The Pav Tav has become more and more run down over the years and is a shadow of what it once was. Fine for watching the football and some cheap beer and food. Let's hope it reopens as it has great potential given it's size and location, but it needs a total refurb and some money invested.

Funny how we all don't know each other but probably stood shoulder to shoulder drinking on many occasions ...

My stint on the "crawl" would have been 77 to about 87 - spent some of my stag night in there too.

Marvellous scenes

Definitley not gonna re-open. I've known this was happening weeks ago. It's part of my district (I work for the same company).

A big shame, but unfortunately these things happen.

Didn't someone say it was going to be converted into apartments? Little chance of it reopening if that happens!
