Sepp Blatter could be open to the possibility of standing for re-election as Fifa president, the BBC understands.

The 79-year-old said he was standing down as the head of world football's governing body less than two weeks ago, just four days into his fifth term.

A new president was expected to be elected, probably in mid-December.

But a source close to Blatter has told the BBC the Swiss could make an audacious bid to stay on if no suitable alternative candidate emerges.

"Everything is open", said the source.

Blatter will hold meetings over the coming days when he will gauge whether he still retains enough support to seek an astonishing sixth term as president.

A wiser man than me predicted this on another thread the day he resigned and it made perfect sense as all he wanted to do was head off the UEFA meeting and threat of a boycott.....

He has plenty of support in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. FIFA spent $131 million in the last 4 years on their annual Congress meetings, which works out as $156,000 per delegate per year. On top of that each member association of FIFA received $1 million last year from the World Cup profits for football development. A lot of the money has been spent on genuine projects, but there is scope for fraud, misfeasance and cronyism in countries where governance is poor.

Blatter gets the credit for this generosity.

Sorry. Where is the surprise in this? Look at the man's history - this is perfectly consistent with his pattern of behaviour. The surprise will be if he does not stay on. Only arrest, profound ill health or murder will stop him, he really is that powerful in world football.

Under the present voting system the numbers will still be overwhelmingly in Blatter's favour. He knows this and has hunkered down in his posh FIFA bunker to try and ride the storm out until December. Why do you think he stayed on for a further six months instead of going immediately? In fairness the man has the hide of an elephant protected by a thick teflon coating and balls of brass and if he can keep out of jail in the interim I predict he'll be back as FIFA presidente with a tear in his eye and ".......in response to the overwhelming vote of support he has received from the world football family"!!
