Ha! Good luck with that prediction

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]But it's a saying, and in the context of horse racing, one of the horses always wins, so the number of horses is the same as the number of possible outcomes. It wouldn't make sense to look at the odds and think they're good in what's a 2 horse race, when there are 3 outcomes.
It was you that mentioned horses, and your analogy, you muppet:
Er, it's 17/1 against (with City 8-1 on). And yes, that'll reflect the betting markets, and their profits etc.Does the 1/17 reflect betting markets sentiment/cash flow, plus the bookies making it nigh on impossible for a high stakes punter to make anything from lumping a large sum on the huge favourites?

If there are two entrants (two legged, four legged, or in the case of a football team, 22 legged) in a contest, it is normally described as a two horse race. A "two horse race" is a respected vernacular expression for a competition with two contestants, be they horse or not. Liverpool and Manchester City, for instance, are currently involved in a two horse race for the PL championship - and anybody who tries to tell you it can't be a two horse race because Liverpool and Man.City aren't horses is likely to make a bit of an idiot of themselves. And even in a two horse race involving two actual real horses, there are still more than two possible outcomes, but it's still a two horse race. But it's a saying, and in the context of horse racing, one of the horses always wins, so the number of horses is the same as the number of possible outcomes. For the purpose of betting odds, not really. And that's what this discussion is about - whether 17-1 is good value in respect of a two horse race - and with there being a fair chance that the result will be a draw, it's daft calling is a 2 horse race. And even in a two horse race involving two actual real horses, there are still more than two possible outcomes
I'll just have to stick to being pedantic then. It is a two horse race, by definition.Yes, there are only two possible outcomes.

You disagree, that's fine.
