[Technology] Second hand IPhone needed - Best site and model?

10 year old daughter has decided to dig her heels in and wants an iPhone for her first mobile phone. However, as it's her first phone we've decided that until she's become a little more responsible second hand is the way forward for now.

I'm firmly entrenched in the android camp so know nothing about iPhones. Accordingly, can anyone suggest a reputable site for reconditioned phones that come with at least a years warranty? And for a fairly limited budget of about £200 what model should I be looking at?

Many thanks for any advice

I bought a reconditioned I Phone SE 3rd Gen from Amazon for £144.00 and it's great bar mild scratchy screen ( graded acceptable condition )

CeX are more expensive generally speaking than Amazon. Benefits are you can see the phone in person and check its condition before purchase if buying in store. But the main benefit is a 5 year free warranty on all items (obviously this covers faults, not damage etc). I don’t expect for a second she’d still be using the phone in 5 years but it’s nice to have

One other thing to consider is the model of phone and compatibility with apps. Apple stop supporting older models with iOS updates and some apps will therefore not work, so my advice would be to not go too old with the model

I've used it a couple of times with good results, it's a marketplace for companies that refurb tech inc phones.

Looks like you'll get an iphone 12 for around £200. Still a decent model.

A problem with her having an iPhone whilst you have Android is that you won't be able to apply parental controls very effectively.

If you are both on Android you can use Family Link, which works very well for:
  • limiting screen time (on/off and hours per day) - inc. remote turning off and on (you WILL want this!)
  • limiting apps / games / etc. by age rating
  • blocking potentially unhealthy apps (e.g. Tiktok, Snapchat)
  • location tracking
likewise I understand Apple has similar with Screen Time (although it's not as good).

Without your own iPhone you won't be able to do some of these things, and others will require your physical presence to type in a PIN direct to the phone.

Appreciate may be saying wrong thing but surprised a 10 y.o. is dictating what phone to have
I would say asking for an iPhone demonstrates good parenting.

We've used GiffGaff for refurbed phones before and never been let down.

If you are disappointed, I think you can just send the phone back for a refund.

Sadly I'm very aware of this as we use Family Link for my sons Samsung Tablet. Thankfully he's quite happy to have a Samsung A16 for his first phone so the security will be easy.

My first experience of BackMarket just 3 weeks ago was really pleasing. If you're flexible about the options and condition, you'll find a great deal.

For £400, I got a Google Pixel 8 Pro 512GB Black that was described as in Fair Condition, but turned up without a scratch on it.

I'd never go back to buying new when you can get a 1 year old phone with many years of updates for 1/3rd of the new price.

Same here.
Good value, and lots of choice, and good after sales.

When my kids first got phones they had Android devices and Family Link worked fine on my iPhone. I could set times their phones could/couldn't be used, it prompted me to give permission before they could download any apps and I could see their locations too. All remote locking/disabling device features worked too. This was a couple of years back but I'd be surprised if it had stopped working in the same way.

I'm hazarding an extremely wild guess here... you don't have children??

Not commenting on the rights and wrongs - more a comment on your "surprise". ;)
To be honest it has been the cause of much heated debate but sadly the degree of aggro is just not worth it if we insist she has a Samsung android. I'm really rather hoping when she sees her brother's shiny new mobile without wear and tear it might get her back onside for her next phone. Trying to explain to her about software updates and support has proven pointless.
