Remember coming back from West Brom league cup game back in the mid 70's and having bricks landing on the roof of the carriages ...coming back from Liverpool in eighty three, getting stuck for two hours outside Watford and people peeing out of the doors as the toilets were all blocked and full of horrible stuff.

Hopefully in terms of throwing bricks at trains now we are moving out of the days of criminal retards (some of them seem to have found employment with the TOCs) but one toilet between 70 or 80 fans could become a bit of a problem at some point...............



No, it won't happen. The pathetically semi-privatised railway system just can't cope.

I suspect the reason they don't do it is because in the 21st century it isn't necessary. Back in the day you got to the away station and then were frogmarched to the ground. These days you go by intercity have some drinks, get to the away town and have some more.

Another reason you can't have them is there is no Stavros!!

My experience was a disaster. Special train for the away cup tie at Forest which famously never made it. 13 hours we on that feckin train and I vowed never to use another one and I never have. Always remember loads of people piling off at some field near Kettering after we got stuck for several hours behind a broken down train. We listened to the game on someone's little radio and the train nearly tipped over when Wardy equalised. Lost 3-1 though.

On that train too. Argus photographer was on there and took a photo of us with a casual “might be in the paper tomorrow...” Actually made the front page.

Christ!! There wouldn't have been any room at the Brighton end of the ground if those other trains had arrived on time.

Given that passenger numbers have doubled since the 90s and the number of trains has increased to I suspect there is very little spare capacity in the network for football specials!

I think I am mixing this game with Derby cup game the year before when only 1 of 3 trains made it to derby. Such a long time ago. I am sure someone will know.

It was definitely the Forest game that only 1 out of 3 trains arrived. I am not aware of the same problem with Derby.

Special to Bristol Rovers got as far as Ditcot and the game was called off £4 a ticket and you got £1 off the game when it was played later which I could not go as I was playing basketball against Sussex uni rang my dad and he said we had won 4-0 I think it was Posket scored all four but grey cells are struggling. They did used old rolling stock but it was great fun.

I recall paying the princely sum of £4.00 (could have been £4.50) for York City return, and we won 1-0.

It certainly was. I was hoping to see some of the sights of York. We just went down lots of backstreets.

I was told by one of the local police escorting us to "Supp that beer before we get t' ground". Getting on at Haywards Heath we always managed to smuggle some beers on. I believe that the fans getting on at Brighton were searched.

I seemed to recall that a lot on the train just went for a trip to York, shopping and sightseeing. Of course Peter Ward scored the only goal of the game. It was the first time that I had seen the Albion win away from home. I still have the programme, signed by Alan Mullery.
