A game me and my mates played before they pumped the shingle was to stand at the edge of the prom against the railings and wait for a huge wave to crash against the sea wall. The aim of the game was to wait as long as possible before running to the wall by the road, leaping over and pulling yourself in so as not to get soaked from the spray. This photo gives a good idea. The spray could easily reach 100 foot high on stormy days. Absolutely great fun and a tad ****ing dangerous in hindsight.

:)

I would imagine the road was flooded regularly, I did live there in the late 90s and never saw what it was like before the changes to the beach.

I recall that, when it was likely to be stormy, my parents would take me to Seaford to see the waves crashing up and over the road. Although further away, for a change, we would go to Hythe (the Kent one) that has/had a similar sea wall and waves in stormy weather. Kids today don't believe passed for entertainment in those days :)

I lived there in the 80s

The landlord of the Wellie back then, told me the pub made up part of the shoreline

Whether it's true or not I don't know

If it is,they have certainly reclaimed a lot of land since

I don’t know to be honest.
This photo from a link in this thread is from 1931, my son recently moved to Seaford near the Wellie, I did wonder why his road had all modern houses and flats and at the top and bottom of the road all very old properties.
You can see from the photo where I have marked there was nothing there back then, I did read it was because of flooding not many properties were built.
