Sea fret - what gives?
Two very similar days; yesterday no sea mist, today a sea mist rolls in around 2ish.
Happened a few times recently with two very similar days and one a sea mist drifts in for a bit, the other stays clear.
So, what's the difference?

Similar, but not identical. That's why weather is so hard to predict.

Next to no wind yesterday, arid air from the SE.

This afternoon a strong/gusty SW brought in humid sea fog.

Remember years ago at Hastings being in the middle of the old cricket ground and a sea fret rolling in. We needed the Hasting's players to show us the way back to the pavilion. 1/2 hour later it rolled back out.

County ground at Hove watching cricket is amazing when this happens...I remember on a few occasions it was so surreal...like watching half black/white and the other half of ground in colour.

A sea fret or 'sea fog' is usually what is known an "advection fog" - which means it occurs when relatively warm, moist air passes over a cool surface - such as the sea.

The cold air which sits just above the sea's surface cools the warm air above it until it can no longer hold its moisture. This forces it to condense into tiny particles of water which form the fog that we see.

Sea fret usually occurs in the spring and summer months when conditions begin to warm up but the sea, which warms more slowly, stays relatively cold.

I was talking to a North Laine shopkeeper this afternoon about the fret and he mentioned he saw two twisters last week which I'm pretty sure I saw as well. Anyone else?

You'd fancy a bowl with that sea mist wouldn't you? Never been there when it's rolled in, but it looks like the ball would do plenty in the air
