SCR Commentary rant

For various reasons I listen to the commentary quite a bit and would agree that Hawsey was a good commentator - good luck to him in his new job.

The new bloke is alright - it is a bloody difficult job and he has to make sure he involves the summariser, goes to the other games at opportune moments and ensure that he tells us listeners what is going on.

It might be his first job as a 'proper' commentator and if he drops a few rickets, who f***ing cares? He's alright

Last night was interesting because we had the input of someone who clearly had not seen us play before and was completely neutral. He said some nice things about our players and again, if he mis-pronounces someone's name, what difference does it make?

I'd rather have a flawed commentary than nothing at all.

The co-commentator was alright.
Anythings got to be better than Norman frigging Gall and his CONSTANT references to "Nicky FOSTER"

Totally agree with both of these.

Hawsey was in a class of his own and made it sound easy. And after doing it for ten years we were more than comfortable with the way he did things. But you have to realise that Gavin is more experienced now than Hawsey was when he first started doing the Albion commentary.

I don't think that Tony Thorpe helped with his mis-pronounciation. Gavin has good potential, and as Insider says, will grow into the role. He does need some better co-commentators though.

I made a similar point on the Luton match thread http://www.northstandchat.biz/showthread.php?p=2763626#post2763626 and it didn't get any better last night.

His commentary really is relentless and the pitch of his voice really grates and makes me feel knackered by the end of the game!
The slight pauses mid sentence and the err-ing plus a long intro sentence to what turns out to be a small fact all through the game does my head in!!!(eg Instead of a Hawesy style "Lets go over to the dripping Pan to see how Lewes are doing" we would get a huge sentence including the opposition manager's name, the weather and what the result was in the first meeting of the season etc and when we switch back to the Albion we've missed something exciting!!) The quality commentators never use too many words but with this guy never one word when 10 will do but he doesn't actually paint anything with what he says during the commentary and I tend to listen to the crowd to determine whats happening!

I always think he commentates as if he was sitting at home watching the game on TV with the sound off commentating to himself. I'm sure we have all done that but we don't believe anyone who says "You should do that professionally"!!

I feel like I'VE just played 90 mins after I listen to this bloke, and I don't mean that in a good way.

As for his constant mistakes. If I liked his style I dare say I might find his endless basic errors endearing, but with this bloke the errors just serve to irritate me further.

If ever there was a case of - "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" - this is it. Hawsey was a class apart.

The commentary guy sounds like he has just come from hospital radio. Last night Tony Thorpe sounded like he was the pro commentator and not the guest contributor. Nice to hear that we have all these new players which reminded me of an international match between Scotland and Bulgaria where the Bulgarians took an unexpected early lead and the commentator had asked others in the press box who scored and came out with the classic "Bulgaria have scored against the run of play with a brilliant strike by Fuktivano."

No disrespect to her, but I would have the new SCR guy over THAT woman commentator who does the Beeb's premier league games. She IS annoying and painful to listen to. And that is NOT a sexist comment, that is my view, and in my opinion she is bloody awful.

I don't mind the mistakes he makes, especially if its his first job, what I cannot stand is the few times you heard "and the shot from the edge of the box is well saved (or whatever)" totally out of the blue and you sitting thinking, what side has shot, what end are we at!

Before Hawsey this happened all the time, and I hope he can get out of this habit.

Yeah, the bloke who did the away Hartlepool cup tie was dreadful. Where did they drag him up from...

God knows. What was his name, Chameleon or something. Bloody awful.

Frankly I'm surprised the club didn't complain. If I were them, I'd have got the press officer on the case...

At least she is not as bad as the woman who reads out the text messages on SCR. Is she there on work experience ?

The Astral Planes, man...
What I don't understand is that after the phone-in there is a half-hour non-league round up of their games, so why the hell do we have to go around Eastbourne, Lewes, Crawley etc all the way through the Albion matches? I'm afraid I end up shouting at the radio demanding to know what is going on. It is only a matter of time before we miss a vital goal. Last night he mistook Jarrett for Fraser - one's black and the other's ginger, oh well, easy mistake!
