There is still a chance that Gerrard could be made captain if Pearce is given the job on a longer term basis. Gerrard will not play the full game tonight, because he played 120 minutes on Sunday. It may well be that Pearce wanted the captain to be someone that will stay on the pitch for the entire game. I think we will find out more when the FA announce their plans for the summer.

O . M . G .

He got DRUNK?

In a BAR?

Lord save us.

On a stag do. 36 hours before having to meet up with the squad and a whole week before he next had to play. It really is a crime, isn't it? I'm surprised the FA have let him continue to represent England.

Do we know if Gerard is even starting? SP said h didn't pick Lampard and Ferdinand because he knows what they can do. I imagine he knows what Gerrard can do, as well so might start without him to give someone less experienced a spot.

Excellent choice by Pearce, if only for a couple of games. But do agree that captain of a football team means nothing like it does in Rugby and especially cricket.

Parker would never have been chosen under previous management - Gerrard, Lamps, Terry, Ferdinand etc etc

Absolute Joke,

Gerrard has constantly been overlooked for England captain when what he has achieved as Liverpool captain is far more than anyone else (In terms of leading by example, dragging his team single handedly on occasions to win trophies and success)

Farce

Apparently Gerrard is generally quite a quiet person, and leads far more by doing than tub-thumping. Perhaps Pearce, given the general youth and inexperience in the squad, thought a more vociferous captain was needed to provide clear guidance and leadership, and thus chose Parker instead?

Oh please, not Scotty. Scott will do. It's his name.
What is it with adding the 'y'?

Scott Parker is a good choice - he has none of the baggage of previous regimes and can lead the way forward post-Stuart Pearce

Surprising choice however Gerrard was an awful Captain in South Africa, his body language made you squirm and it was pretty obvious he was not comfortable being the captain.

But the point is, this is not Liverpool but England. Gerrard, while rarely being the worst player on the pitch, has rarely been the player for England that is is (was) for Liverpool. I always felt like he was trying desperately hard to be David Beckham, looking for the inch perfect lofted pass sixty yards down the pitch, which- if a Bolton player did it, would be called a hoof or a long ball- and far, far too often giving it away to the opposition. Gerrard is not Beckham, and his attributes at Liverpool were always his drive, his ability to get forward, and his finishing. He's not the pretty pretty passer that Beckham often was and I found it incredibly frustrating watching him try to do that.

I can never work out why he gets so much less stick than Frank Lampard for England, as he's been at least as culpable for the team's failures over recent years. Personally, if all the younger players were fit, I wouldn't have either of them in the squad, much less captain. Add to that that Gerrard's best days seem to be past him (he was dismal against Cardiff at the weekend and has done chuff all for the last two seasons) and it's perfectly obvious why Pearce has gone for Parker, a player at his peak.
