Looking a bit black over our Will's Mother's.

Seems to be Bill in other versions.

My father had a long period of saying “you always know what sort of game you’re going to get with a short referee” whenever a short referee ran out at the Goldstone. He was always right as well.

You’ll live was another one, used when I hurt myself.
I came home after school and told my mum I fell over in PE, her answer “you’ll live” without looking at my arm that was swollen and ready hurting. I had actually broken my wrist, but trying to convince her I needed to visit the hospital was a drama.
I suppose she was right as I’m still here.

“You’ll live to want“ whenever I spent every penny I had on some shit

From my father having a G&T in the garden with his friends when I fell out of a tree onto a tent peg “ He’s screaming, he’s fine”

I think that now every time I hear a footballer go down and rolls about screaming :lolol:

Mum (89) & Dad (95) still with us, but mum poorly now in nursing home>

If making a mistake - Mum "You pays for yer learning"
If driving a bit too fast - Mum "Slow down, better to arrive late in this life than early in the next"
When holding the moral high-ground - "Turn the other cheek"
When following a dawdling driver - Dad "Com'on old fruit, chop-chop"

My South African cousins talk about "going for an oil change" when off to take a dump ...

If my dad was off out, and I asked where he was going, the reply was always “To Timbuktu and back, to see how far it is”, meaning it was none of my business. I had no idea that was a real place.

Take from whence it comes. I do my best, but rarely succeed, especially when that odious, grotesque, self-righteous, bloated, conscience by-pased, compulsive lying, incompetent, dishevelled, brexit enforcing, item of ridicule opens his mouth. When I get my blue passport, I know where I'd like to shove it............

My dad gave me perhaps the most sound advice I’ve ever heard; Never trust a Tory.

In footballing terms it was always “he’s no Peter Ward”

Oohh...the damp weather has gone right to my bones (mum)

'hard lines, hard lines' when suffering a near miss e.g. hit the post. I guess that's a saying from the Shove ha'penny game? (my dad).

Quite telling that so many phrases from our childhood are about minding your own business, threatening violence, or denying us things!

My mum’s phrases were things such as;

“Don’t you dare”

“do you want the wooden spoon”?

“I don’t want to hear a peep”

“I want doesn’t get”

“Want into one hand, shit into the other and see which one fills up first”

“If I have to come up there..”

“I’ll have your guts for garters”

“I’m telling your father”

My actual father disappeared to the pub most nights. And I don’t blame him, an evening with my mother as the alternative.
I think she laughed about once a year.

They’re both dead now.

My dad very rarely told me off….. I do still remember him telling me to ‘button it’ though.
