[Albion] Say what you like about Poyet but he could certainly spot a player

He also wanted to sign Marcus Alonso after he left Bolton.Available for around £2m at the time.A defender who has scored more goals than all our forwards this season!

Wasn’t Stephens a recommendation from Nathan Jones rather than someone Burke actually recruited? Sure Burke may have got him over the line but without that initial recommendation would he have even been aware.

But we can't have it both ways.
We can't label him with every single failure (of which there were many) in his tenure, then say the successes, Ulloa Stephens Stockdale were down to someone else.

Yes we can. Nathan did recommend Stephens, whom he knew at Charlton, and as has been pointed out previously, Poyet had targeted Ulloa & was just waiting for the five year qualification for a passport.

Stephens wasnt signed in the poyet era hemce why i didnt include him initially and in my opening post i did reference both stephenson and burke (and dont forget the latter and his role was a key factor in two managers leaving - poyet and garcia - and was dispensed with ahead of hughton arriving

Whilst the OP is right in the instance of a lot of players (and wonderful memories), Poyet made two massive errors that overshadow most of the good things he did for the club.

1. Pushing Murray out (to Palace) was the worst ‘footballing’ mistake the club (instigated by Gus) have made in decades and one that Palace are still benefiting from.

2. It was Gus’ tippy-tappy ‘Possession’ football that had reached it’s ceiling, not BHA. What a cruel and spiteful lie.

There does seem to be a fair bit of rosy-specs around Poyet and NSC.

Footballing wise I thought he was the dogs dangles, right up until Hughton got into his stride.
From then on if it weren't for NSC fascination with the man I wouldn't be giving him a second thought.

What Hughton has delivered to us over the last 2 seasons, makes everything before else seem dull, slow, and in GP's case tippy-tappy.

Can you image:-

Ryan to Dunk to Duffy to Ryan to Bruno to Stephens to Ryan to Dunk...

Is this totally rewriting history? Once again Poyet gets the plaudits for those that worked and the recruitment team the blame for those that didn't or that we didn't sign. VVD went to a club playing in the champions league, not the championship. No one at that time would have foreseen him being eventually sold for £75M! His management of Vicente was appalling. Coming to the end of his first year spouting off in the press that any decision for the second year was down to the player then at the last minute forcing him to stay, seemingly against his preference. He also resigned Seb Carole!!!!!

No rewriting of history here....vicente was a complicated player bombed out of his previous club as being too moody to play and having mysterious injuries.

The early poyet signings were pre stephenson or burke

As for vvd - i was told by someone linked to celtic that the only sticking point with him coming to us was he fee with groningen. Also when they signed him they felt he would go to the premier league for at least double what they paid. Granted nobody foresaw the current valuation but it was clear he would be an investment.

And that's before talking about players like kishishev or marcos painter or greer etc

Cant disagree with any of this. When i started this thread it was purely based on player spotting rather than his behaviour as a manager

Any club making 30 or so deals, you should find at least 8 can put a positive spin on. Some of those were hardly stellar but decent enough at the time too.

Far more misses than hits for me but a very enjoyable period and good football.

There were more than enough missed to make up for the hits though - and the loans didn’t exactly set the world alight down here.

Losing Murray for nothing, replacing him with CMS and then playing to the total opposite of his strengths says enough for me.

This.

But Poyet in an interview about 18 months after letting Murray go, in effect, blamed that on the club due to "budgets" in summer 2011. Don't know if he was being wholly truthful?

Spot on.

The rapid counter attacking Championship football under CH, with masses of goals and wins, was light years ahead of the slow paced possession based snooze-fest in most Amex games before his arrival.

Poyet cancelled two meetings with Murray to discuss a contract renewal after the season had ended. This led to him signing for Palace. Point the finger elsewhere but Poyet could’ve sorted that out if he’d have really wanted to.

Just watched the DVD from last season and on it TB categorically states he wanted Murray to stay but felt he had to back his manager who wanted him to go.

And let's face it - has anyone ever heard GP say he was wrong about anything ever? Nothing is his fault.

Really! He left Bolton after the 2012/13 season had finished which was when Poyet had been suspended. He didn't sign a new contract that Bolton were offering which would suggest to most that he knew where he was heading before the season ended, probably from January 2013 when he would have been free to negotiate with clubs.

Shame it used to take us 20 minutes and about 70 backwards passes to get the ball to the halfway line.

I know...winning all those championships was areal bummer wasnt it.

fancy what a shit manager, turning a magnificent team , really doing well under Slade and Adams and making them absolute relegation candidates....why did we ever get him to join our club? I hated all those wins, those magnificent games with Bobby creaming sides, all those victory parades, hated every minute...as fro bringing in some of these foreign wasters ...it was pathetic

Absolute shit of a manager...should never have been let anywhere near our perfect club.

This thread wasnt intended to be a pro or anti poyet piece nor to bemoan his passing or gloss over his failings (like you im really enjoying the present) but more about how players he did sign or wanted to sign have progressed very well

Unfortunately those who disliked him will always bring up his failings, no matter what the focus of the thread.

Some cannot bring themselves to say anything good, like all those backwards passes led to a record number of weeks at the top of the table, & winning a record 95 points in one season, following the previous one, by saving us from relegation.

So, he had a volatlie Latin temperament. What do you expect from a Uruguyan?
