He didn't lead the rescue but he went into the caves to assess the boys medical conditions and then stayed in the caves for 3 days to ensure the boys remained healthy enough to go through the rescue attempt. It was his decision on if the attempt would go ahead after his medical assessment of the boys. His presence was requested by the Thai Government after British divers identified him for his unique skill set.

What on earth is all this about? Vern Unsworth turned down an offer for a mini submarine saying it wasn't suitable for the cave rescue, but then last night Elon Musk started tweeting vicious allegations calling him a pedo (sic) because he lives in Thailand. The tweets have now been deleted.
