Evening all, i upgraded my phone today and had the options of anything in the shop but still staying on the same tariff as i had before, and not knowing the first thing about mobiles, naturally i took the most expensive looking one they had - The samsung galaxy S.

I didn't take out any orange internet at an extra cost, so i'm not on the internet with orange, however when i got home i found out i could still go on the internet through my sky internet connection.

My question is, will going on the internet at home on my mobile through my sky broadband cost me any extra on my phone bill with orange?

This might be a stupid question, but as i know next to nothing about mobiles or anything like that i thought i'd make sure just in case i end up paying stupid amounts on my phone bill.

A phone like that is centered around being connected to the internet so whilst connecting via your sky through wifi won't cost you any money from orange, you really ought to pay the extra fiver or so a month for mobile internet to get the most out of your phone.

you may be able to pick up free wifi in shops etc when out and about . but dont turn on mobile internet unless you have a package with orange or theyll sting you

i agree that it's best to go the extra fiver for internet, it is an absolute god send to have at times, so well worth the extra money, but if you dont have the free internet package you will get well stung by your bill

The Android operation system on that phone will want internet access a lot. Its does things like syncing your contacts with your google account, backing up all programs and setting in case you need to factory reset or get another phone, checks email regularly... i couldn't live without internet access on my Android phone

Android is amazing, the market place is expanding very fast, and its on its way to becoming the most bought smartphone. Already overtaken Blackberry for non-business users

I've got a Blackberry and wouldn't be without internet access - plus I use it as a modem for my laptop when out and about at no extra cost. Great value for a fiver a month.

Think you will find that your access via SKY is costing you nothing but be very careful your phone doesn't automatically access for syncing purposes (email/facebook/twitter etc) as that could cost you. A quick call to Orange's help centre will clarify. I have found them to be quite helpful

Htc Desire is the best phone I've ever used, prefer it to the iphones. Something more appealing, for me, about having a dedicated home page and a thoroughly customisable layout. As soon as some of the aps get up to standard it will prove a big competitor for Apple..

im confused... you brought a top of the range Samsung phone running Andriod but didnt bother with the internet data package? whats the point of that? its like buying a cooker and not having any saucepans and oven trays to cook food, just a hob kettle to make a cuppa.

I've got android running on my HTC HD2 now and I blumming love it, its miles better that the WM6.5 it should be running.. I'm running the Nexus1 flavour of 2.2 which I much prefer over the HTC builds with sense ...

I have yet to have a go on the samsung but everything I've read about it states that its an awesome bit of kit, get your self a web bolt on though Android will be useless without it

If you've got GPS built in to your phone (pretty sure I remember seeing it in the TV ads), turn off AGPS (use the built in GPS receiver instead) if you want to use the GPS function when you're out and about. This uses the mobile phone towers to locate your position and sends\receives data from them. If you don't have mobile internet, you'll get charged for data usage.

The battery life on this phone is crap. Don't know if thats just mine or the phone in general. Doesn't last 12 hours with minimal use. Or is this true of all so-called smart phones?

I think Andriod is just the name for it's operating system.I was looking at getting the Wave.I do love my Samsung phones as they tend to be far more relaible.

I've had a Samsung Galaxy-S since it was released 2 months ago and totally love it's sheer performance and speed of use, regardless of what I'm doing!

The processor and graphics have been benchmarked as the fastest on the planet for any currently released mobile phone and thats before it gets the "froyo" Android update in the next few weeks which in theory should increase general performance by as much as 400% !!!!

My battery life is pretty good, although it depends what you use it for.

Battery life doesnt really bother me..never has... or am i the only person who
steals electricity from work?
My HTC Legend had battery life of about 10 hours the first week I had it. Now ive calmed down to normal use its up to about 16

Bought one on Wednesday. It's a great phone but, not being used to touch screen, I have found it a steep learning curve. I have a 500MB a month limit on the internet but use my Sky account at home so I should be OK.

Agree about the battery. I am charging the bloody thing every day.

Still pleased I bought it though!

There are a couple of reasons for this:

Firstly, a 'Lithium Ion/Pol' battery takes a few charges before it reaches its full capacity.

Plus, when you first get your new phone, you hammer the battery by using it so much! Downloading, exploring features, occasionally you may even find yourself phoning someone!

All this drains the battery quickly

But, as with most smart phones, you just need to get used to plugging it in every night. It does a LOT compared to older phones, and the batteries are fairly small, so its a compromise.
