Does anyone know if Leverkusen adopted the same approach under Sami?

The problem today was the full backs were wide up the pitch and the midfielders who were supposed to cover than on counter attacks didn't !

They did cover. Brentford utilise the space left by Bennett / Calderon well though, and always had two men one Brighton player. A centre mid VS two players on the wing is never going to work well for the defending side! I actually though Holla and Gardner did exceptionally well given the circumstances. If Bennett and Calderon actually defended more, they wouldn't of looked so dangerous on every attack.

The full backs position themselves on the half way line under Hyypia, I'm pretty sure that is what he has told them to do?

Of course. However, I'm pretty sure they're instructed to get back too?

On so many occasions today, after a Brighton attack broke down, Bennett wasn't even close to getting back to our half. By the time he did, Brentford already got a cross / shot in. That isn't good enough.

Yes he did. It worked very well. Eventually though, teams worked the system out (like what Brentofrd did today with two players attacking the covering midfielder when our fullbacks lost the ball upfield) and Laver went on a terrible run resulting with Sami's sacking.

I like Sami, I really do and I prefer his style to Oscars, but pushing the full-backs so far up the pitch, that slower midfield players are left 1 on 1 with nippy wingers, is just wrong. The second goal, Calderon was still on the halfway line.

Crofts is not a right back, he needs to be more central to have an impact. Very disappointed.

A decent side will rip us to pieces!!!! Good luck Sami if you continue with this system, sadly the midfield can't seem to grasp the concept and until they do we will be conceding goals every game!
We are over complicating the game! We have the quality to succeed but not playing this way!! :glare:

Also Laver are a better side to Albion! Man Utd have struggled with this system too!!

Which in Albion terms translates to it looks great but it ain't anyway to win a football match. I think we have problems...

Six games in ....some of this side have played between 1 and 4 league games with the 'system' ..of which we have only lost one..personally i'm prepared to give it a few more games yet :)

We need quicker defenders. It makes all the difference in this formation.

Agreed, Calde was all over the park today but he hasn't got the legs to play that role although I thought he played well he left acres of space behind him.

Couldn't understand Teixeira being subbed as he was our only truly decent player creating anything. Baldock did nothing and should have been replaced.
Then why bring on Kaz and play him in the middle when we were desperate for some width. I'm sure Sami will get it right but we were very poor today with little to optimistic about

As I understand it we are playing a very different style to that which Sami used at Leverkusen last season. I guess to some extent Sami is finding his way. Give him more time.

My biggest worry is when super sub comes on he's not playing as and out and out winger almost waste of time him comming on . He's most effective running at fullbacks to the byline but showing nothing at the moment in fact it looks as he don't no wot he's supposed to do either

Would Bruno do better at right/wing back in place of Calderon for Tuesday at Ipswich?

Absolute guarantee that the right back won't get back then.

We looked better with him in the middle. he did at least offer some protection on that side if Calderon went on forwards.

Today both flanks were constantly exposed.

Why play a left or right back at all if you want them to play 95% of the time beyond the midfield. In reality Calderon was playing as a winger with Crofts playing behind him. Tell you what why not play an out and out winger and a right back behind him. Same positions as today but with players better suited to the roles. Random I know but may work.
