I think it all started to go wrong - recruitment wise - when Stephen Ward understandably changed his mind at the last minute and chose PL football with Burnley. And weren't we close to signing Lewis Grabban from Bournemouth but he went to Norwich instead ?
Think we missed out on Adam Clayton as well when things started going pear shape, as well as starting the season with Vitaljis Maksimenko as our only fit LB from memory.

It is forgotten that Poyet's "glass ceiling" comments after the Palace game were partly in relation to FFP. He said in the same press conference Brighton had big problems as a result, or something along those lines

Oscar presumably foresaw the same problems 12 months later, which is why he resigned. And it ended up being Hyypia who was in charge of a load of crap players signed on loan when the budget was cut
Loved Tony's pointed 'there is no ceiling' quote in the SoF documentary.

I'm sure i've seen somehwere in a lovely graph - and still surprised to this day - that the player budget actually went down that season. and i think it was the only year in Bloom era that this was the case. Have you ever worked out why or the rationale for that ? (David Burke ? Expected signings not going through ? Bloom having wobbles ? Not trusting Hyypia ? )

It did go down, but not significantly, suspect that in other seasons there were also bonuses for getting to the playoffs too.

The dull part of the south coast
It was soon after ffp was announced and barber and bloom were trying to cut their cloth accordingly given previous spending decisions. Rumour has it that's why Oscar left as he knew what was coming.

Burke and his predecessor were both appalling in different ways.
Rumour has it that Oscar left for reasons other than football related.

One of the great nights at the Amex, all for the wrong reasons. It wasn't great at the time, but looking back, what a spectacular.

Many Amex only Brighton fans won't understand what it's like to be properly shit, but at least they had that night.

Character building. Makes you enjoy the good times more.

Still absolutely insane when you consider the current recruitment setup that anyone at the club run by Bloom and Barber sanctioned replacing future Premier League winner Leo Ulloa with Barnsley forward Chris O'Grady.

I think we must’ve really needed the money that year. We got about £8m for Ulloa, and COG cost about £500k.

Depressive Sami’s system always seemed to be:

You two fullbacks - you do everything. The rest of you mill around in the middle and hope for the best.
SH: "Fullbacks, I want you to be our threat out wide. Keep wide and push up"
Fullbacks: "So who in midfield is going to cover us whilst we go forward?"
SH: "..... so get forward and track back. When you get tired I won't sub you as we don't have any other fullbacks in the squad"

Akpom and Obika were up there, Obika probably trumps it for me but Leon isnt far behind.
Good shouts.

My personal worst was Gary Gardner. He thought he was a fancy dan ball playing midfielder dropping down to slum it for a small club in the second tier, who barely ran, couldn’t tackle and played constant 5 yard backwards passes. Made Stephens look like Pirlo.

Absolutely pony.

Robbie Savage was shocking too.

Yes Me. ! I wrote a over optimistic piece for the Seagull Love Review rather prematurely suggesting he had a touch of the Mark Lawrensons about him.
Oh you weren't alone. I remember going on the Albion Roar and saying he was my favourite player. Well he was!

But yes, it was definitely the low point of our modern (i.e the Amex) era.

Probably because he seemed like the second coming of Yaya Toure when inserted into a midfield 3 which consisted of Gary Gardner, Jake Forster Caskey and Danny Holla, which in the first 20 minutes at Derby had about the same goal protection skills of a sieve.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
He was so shit, does anyone remember his overhead kick that went straight up? a real Laugh out loud moment. Amazingly he scored for us in his time here, more than that can be said for Akpom and Best.
I woz there. An FA cup game at Port Vale with us singing to Micky Adams, their manager. 😂😂

DIdnt Paul Watson have a tear up with a fan in the West Stand during that Millwall game? Toxic was an understatement.

Obika always tried, can't fault him for that, and his salute celebration when he scored in the FA Cup against Port Vale were excellent.

Akpom gets my vote as the worst ever, how he is at Ajax is baffling, but has scored six so far this season. His dad was/is the problem.
