The chavs have always been there, like they have in every single other part of Brighton or Hove.

It's no better or worse than it ever was. I can remember a bunch of 1970s chavs ( probably with Burberry flares ? ) called the 'SVA' in the 1970s (Saltdean Vandals Association).

I see very little crime in Saltdean now though, and everyone gets on well, part of a very nice community. The kids outside the Co-Op are just that, kids. My eldest is probably one of them. They are too young to go to the pub, but too old to hang out in the park.

I think Saltdean has matured into a real decent and pleasant community and me and Mrs Mart honestly cant think of a better place to bring up our offspring.

Hmm. It's slowly getting worse. I was back for Biscuits birthday at the end of september and was attacked by chavs in the park! Constantly police down there and around the church now.

Ahem...........in the 80s I was visited by the police once, accused of that sinister crime - throwing stones at the park keepers door :clap2: :clap2:

I went there once with a couple of mates.

Eyes all turn to you and follow your every movement.

Very uncomfortable.

Same thing happend down the Black Horse (dads fav). Tend to go down the White Horse now. Old man doesn't go there tho because they wouldn't let him in with a motorbike helmet a few hundred years ago. :jester:

White Horse - Woodingdean pub.
Plough - Dean Court Road Pub.
Queen Vic - St Dunstans Pub.
Black Horse - Rottingdeans finest pub. Until they stopped the Harveys.

Disagree as the Spanish Lady was the St Dunstan's pub.

In my hey day every night around 5 St Dunstans people were there - toilet duty was legendary, let's all do the conga let's all do the conga la la la la etc, use your imagination people

Sorry, can I just interupt this black horse love in for a moment!

I'm sorry, but it WAS (as turkey said, my dads fav) but now The Black Horse is going down hill. Not only has it stopped Harveys (which is unforgivable in its self) but the I've never known such a fag ridden pub.

I have no problem with cancer sticks, but that place is disgusting. I used to go alot, but now, even if you stick your head round the door for a second you come out absolutly reeking!

The Plough every time thank you very much! :clap2:

The Badgers Watch is the best pub by far in the area, if you like good food, good beers, log fires, and all the rest.

Its a quality act at the moment and hard to beat imho.

dont get me started on the Saltdean Tavern though - what a missed opportunity that was...

Built behind the Lido.

Basically they told everyone it'd be a fine pub with facilities for a youth club.

They got planning permission.

The pub/bar/restaurant is a disgrace, and they 'youth club' is great.. if your under 5ft.

Oh that horrible thing next to one of the greatest Art Deco buildings ever - The wonderful, truly amazing Saltdean Lido.

My favourite building

I do love the Lido, but I love the home of the Pied Piper!

I went to Hamelin, Germany last year. Most beatiful town I've ever visited.

De La War Pavillion and Saltdean Lido are the two best buildings in Sussex by a mile.

I fell in love with Art Deco when I lived in Bexhill - Miami is the best place I've been for Art Deco, however, I suspect Cuba is better and there are other great places.

That cathedral in Barcelona would get my vote. If we were doing a favourite building thread, which we're not.

I used to work at St D's - and the bus used to run down to Rottingdean - right opposite the Queen Vic. At one time the Ovingdean building was almost emtirely used as a holiday home - so there were lots of them out at the local pubs.
