The main reason is that, for the first time for 16 years, I'm getting a membership. I couldn't go when the kids were growing up but now Mrs G and I can look forward to a few days at the cricket.

But there's room for optimism too. Let's look at a potential team for the opening game

Haines
Orr
Rizwan
Head
Clark/Coles/Ward
Ibrahim
Hudson-Prentice
Garton
Archer
Robinson
Carson

That's four test match players, one England A player and three former or current (one of whom happened to be the top scorer in English cricket last year) England U19 players. And if Robbo or Archer aren't allowed to play (unlikely in Archer's case - they'll want to see him fit), we can bring in Finn or Atkins.

It's really not too shabby

Indeed, there's a but to look forward to there I reckon. Rizwan will be fun to watch.

Hopefully these kids will bring us some success again, eventually, if they don’t all leave for Surrey once we’ve trained them up a bit.

The T20 and 50 over sides look decent too!

Nor was it last season but it’s a results business and as a team we were awful.

Take Robbo and Archer out of that, a repeat of Head’s batting on English wickets and a slow start from Rizwan, and we’re back to scores of sub 200, an impotent bowling line up and 3 day defeats.

Call me a pessimist?? 😀

From County Champions to bottom of the pile and a mass exodus in 15 years. F#cking omnishambles.

In my defence, I was left unsupervised.

Travis Head has bailed on his contract due to international commitments and his partner being pregnant.

Sussex have to find a new captain (again).

No matter, he was rubbish anyway. We need to sign the other Travis Head, you know, the one who played for Australia in the last Ashes series.

Pujara coming as replacement for Head.

I am struggling to complain about that.

GOSBTS.
Exactly. We need a new captain I know, but Pujara is a proven test match batsman over a long period of time.

Pujara incoming is, at last, a piece of excellent news. He should provide a level of stability and run generation at the top of the order that we have only been able to dream about over the last few seasons.
