You seriously think we've got our red and white flag of St George back from the stigma so regularly applied to it, do you? Still a red rag to a bull to so many, to the extent that many more are afraid - or at best reluctant - to wave it for fear of inappropriate but hurtful negative stereotyping.

Luckily they don't post on NSC.

I think you have been touched by the flame of those who babble about Trained Marxists and the like. I have never met anyone frightened to wave the flag. You don't have to be a racist fool to have a bit of love for England and our doings. Euro 96 was the turning point for me. Damned if I was having my culture, heritage and nationality stolen from me by prats like pretty pink fairy. England is mine. As it is yours. Anyone who doesn't like that, or indeed wants to steal it to promote hate, can far cough

Out of interest, are there any examples of people being actively prevented from celebrating St George's Day by anyone, or is it one of those things like "they're banning Christmas" where nobody ever actually bans Christmas?
I've never heard of any actual situations. More people complaining about them.

I wonder if those making such claims have any examples?

Trained marxists? Nah. Just urbane, sophisticated, socially liberal people who leap at any opportunity to falsely stereotype someone or something as racist or fascist or whetever. No such posters on NSC? Have you forgotten the B.....t thread before or was taken out of the mainstream?

Agree though that we did get a brief rennaissance of our English flag during Euro '96 (and to some extent in later WCs).

Sounds like you're being offended on behalf of others which I know you're not a big fan of

Not sure why you are arguing about this, just celebrate. What would England be today if George didnt kill that dragon?

Oof.

Its interesting with the bank holiday debate... Back in 2005 Sweden was about to make the national day a red day and indeed the bunch of "zomg I'm not even allowed to be Swedish these days) also though that the true enemies of society - "socially liberal and sophisticated" people - would take the streets and protest this idea.

Turned out no one had any interest in fighting it. The whole "cant even be Swedish these days" / "cant even put up a Swedish flag without being called a racist" was, as usual, just some dumb ****ing ghost created in the minds of the far-right.

Did you get to any of the big St George Day celebrations yesterday? There were a few going on today as well, with some towns making a weekend out of it. I’m sure you managed to get to one of those, no?

I know you are going to avoid the question, because the answer makes you look a bit silly but perhaps next year, instead of going online and moaning about nobody being allowed to celebrate you could go online and look up the many hundreds of celebrations taking place? Spare us all the “salt of the earth, school of hard knocks” routine? What say you, good man?

Attaboy.

For the record St George's Day was celebrated from the mid 13th century onwards throughout medieval England with large processions that included giant models of dragons and people dressed as St George. It was very popular in both a religious and national sense.

However, during the 16th century when the country decided to exit the pan European Catholic church the government of Edward VI banned celebrations deeming it a foreign imposition that had never been part of the Bible.

George was kept as patron saint because he was a foreigner - the Protestant government wished to outlaw many Catholic practices which included the building of shrines and pilgrimages to them - hence the destruction and confiscation of the relics at the abbey of Bury St Edmunds that removed St Edmund as a national saint.

In other words we ceased celebrating St George because the government of the time banned any celebrations of saints as they were deemed too Catholic - a good Protestant would not lower themselves to celebrating any saints day. That is the tradition that evolved over the following centuries.

He's too busy falsely claiming that people like me are hounding people like him for being a racist for celebrating St George.

I've heard of people being offended on behalf of others, but being offended on behalf of a foreign saint who slayed an imaginary dragon is frankly potty

Quite. Moaning about not being allowed to do something that he actually has an open invitation to

In Trafalgar Sqaure :lolol:

You’d think anyone wanting to celebrate the day would have to have a ciphered invitation to a clandestine, subterranean lair in danger of execution if discovered :lolol:
