St Edmund was the original patron saint of England, let's all fly his flag on 20th November:

“Few historical facts about Edmund are known……He is thought to have been of East Anglian origin”

Makes him better than that foreign Turkish Moscow Saint Greek **** already!

He is actually British. Take back control, I’m in!

The Guardian have a St George themed crossword today.

If I complete it, does that make me a wokey-dokey SJW racist?

I get equally annoyed by politically correct institutions by the Guardian who in fear of being labelled racist start celebrating St George to try to convince people we have been celebrating it all along.

.. which we haven't.

We've spent far more time celebrating Robin Hood.

You think that The Guardian are worried that if the don't celebrate St George they will be labelled racist? How does that work?

Nonsense. Poppycock. I'm a lefty and I put the red and white flag out whenever England are playing a football tournament. All this 'can't celebrate' bollocks is just that, bollocks propagated by the same type of goon who said that if we allowed homosexuality to be legal it would soon be made compulsory.

I know you're an old git but I expected better of you than that

And times have changed. In the late 70s the red and white flag was the exclusive property of the military and racist skin heads (which will be why pretty pink fairy has posted on this thread).

And not much before that we never saw the red and white flag. See what flags were waved at the English world cup final, when pretty pink fairy was still soiling his nappies:

You seriously think we've got our red and white flag of St George back from the stigma so regularly applied to it, do you? Still a red rag to a bull to so many, to the extent that many more are afraid - or at best reluctant - to wave it for fear of inappropriate but hurtful negative stereotyping.

Why don’t you dry your eyes, get a George Cross and wave it wherever the heck you like? Just as other people can choose not to get a George Cross and wave it around.

Personally I’m glad we English don’t constantly bang on about the flag, our country and identity like the Irish, the Scots and the Taffs do. Causes nothing but ****ing grief. And it’s boring. Trust me, my family are from Belfast, I know first hand .

However, there were plenty of St George’s Day events (listed by me earlier) that you could have gone to and waved your flag with plenty of other like-minded people with no fear of judgement. Didn’t fancy any of those?

I’d rather be waving a BHA scarf in the air than a national flag any day of the year.

It's a trend. Just to reiterate.

No-one gave a flying f@@@ about St. Georges day until a few years ago. I grew up in the 1970s in a deeply "conservative" area, I know.

Recently the myth that we weren't allowed to was generated. Institutions like the Guardian realised that they could have their cake and eat by starting to.

By acknowledging it, they could communicate they didn't have a problem with it as others suggested because look we have a crossword !

But if "accused" of nationalism, they could easily defend themselves by pointing out that St George wasn't English anyway etc. and has little to do with nationalism, but a religious cult that developed across Europe and was brought back by the Crusaders with some fairy tales sprinkled on top.

The whole debate is utterly bollocks and very modern.

It's become a modern proxy for a "National England Day" which it is nothing about.

Did you not fancy any of the many organised St George’s day events they were on today? Family events, church services, military displays, historical re-enactments, street parties? Nothing took your fancy?

Didn’t fancy making your way up to Trafalgar Square for St George’s feast today then? George Crosses as far as the eye can see…

One could almost be forgiven for thinking all this anti-flag hysteria is a load of rubbish!

You didn’t fancy it then?

Ah St George's day. An annual festival of people either celebrating, not celebrating or pretending they are not allowed to celebrate because of the 'woke' people.

Seems like it is a bigger thing now that the woke people don't allow anyone to celebrate it than it was when we are all joyfully politically incorrect and allowed to do what we want. Weird.

My day is usually the same, I completely forget about it until my brother gets up and sends me a red and white picture about it exclaiming 'Happy St Georges Day". Then I reply with the same and put on some English music or comedy to remind myself what we are best at (just an opinion fellas, not trying to tell you how to celebrate). Then feel a little nostalgic and wonder what celebrations I am missing out on. Text my brother and ask him what he is doing for the day. "Not much, working all day, then might go for a pint later" is the somewhat underwhelming reply.

It is becoming a tradition.

. . . . anyway back to The Smiths "England is mine, and it owes me a living" - very patriotic Mozza

God, was there ?.

:lolol:

Just like Christmas trees and Morris Dancers people will be convincing themselves that Englanders have been celebrating these things for years.

I noticed Saturday Kitchen was up to it this morning as well.

It's the new Halloween.

I thought we were the undefinable nation, exporting our nuance and culture across the world that no-one could pin down.

No, **** it. We need a Sombrero, a cuckoo clock or a comedy plastic monk when you press its head he exposes his plastic erection.

We are better than that.

Can't say I've ever given much thought to St. George's Day.

I would say the idea of celebrating something in the name of a saint (of a religion I don't follow) who fought a dragon (which don't exist) to show off my innate English-ness is a bit weird if I'm honest. That said - if people want to do that then go for it, it's entirely none of my, nor anyone else's, business.

Yep. Everyone’s looking for a ****ing experience these days. Can’t just get a haircut, it’s got to be a barber experience, can’t just have a bite to eat on the hoof, it’s got to be 3 day marinaded pulled pork and brioche experience prepared by the limbless albinos of Kathmandu (shoreditch). Can’t just have a pint, toast St George and get on with their day.

People make things so unnecessarily tense and bitter. People should chill.

Good old BBC..... 'Hundreds'

Regards
DF

I’d say there were hundreds. It does look a little sparse though. Perhaps you and the other people moaning that nobody celebrates the day should have attended and uhm…celebrated the day?

“Why does nobody celebrate St George’s Day”?

“Uhm, actually we are putting on a big event in Trafalgar Square in London but also there’s Chichester, Lewes, and if you’re up North, Nottingham is having a huge public event”

“No thanks, I’m spending the day on NSC bitching that there are no events on anywhere”

Out of interest, are there any examples of people being actively prevented from celebrating St George's Day by anyone, or is it one of those things like "they're banning Christmas" where nobody ever actually bans Christmas?
