Sainsburys... settle a bet

Rubbish thread, but can anyone confirm that there was a Sainsburys in both Churchill Sq AND Worthing town centre in the 80's?

I reckon so, the other half isn't convinced

Years ago there was a Sainsbury's in Chapel Road in what is now a clothing shop about 3 doors north of Subway. I think that is the one .

There was definitely one in Warwick Street before it was pedestrianised but I am not sure when that was as time seems to fly by and what seems like last year was probably 10 years ago so not sure if it was in the 80s

sainsbury was in warwick street worthing, then moved to what is now store 21 in chapel road, my dad was meat manager at both shops. there was also a sainsbury in the parade of shops in goring road, which is now a co-op.

Sainsburys used to be at the back of Churchill Square

My mother used to cycle to the Goring Road branch and I remember that they sold their butter not in packets or tubs but from a large block that they cut into the required portion or size and then patted it out into shape in an oblong block with wooden tools.

I used to be the trolley collector for the one in Churchill Square, which was a shit job, especially when going into the car park and having to step over the piss sodden TRAMPS who congregated there on a Saturday.

Thought I was posh going into sainsbury worthing after a hospital visit in the 80's, it certainly beat shoppers paradise or keymarkets where we usually shopped in littlehampton.

I remember the J Sainsbury in Chapel Road, Worthing and also the Tesco and Co-Op on Montague Street... was there also a Tesco in Churchill Sq? I seem to remember it being on 2 levels or have I mixed that up with Sainsbury?

For the record my very first job was as a Friday night (after sixth-form college) cashier at Fine Fare in Broadwater. Incidentally the job lasted longer than college (got thrown out at half-term)

As a primary school kid in the late 60's we had already moved away from Brighton, but I recall staying with Grandparents in Hove and going to a very old style Sainsbury's in Worthing, maybe in the late '60's or early 70's - where they served you from behind the counter - what was now be thought of as a very top end quality grocers - does any one else remember this ?

I remember when Sainsburys had a small shop in Western Road where you were served from behind a counter. They had marble work surfaces and they cut cheese with a wire and it was wrapped in greaseproof paper. Always big queues in it.

They had the same style of shop on London Road opposite the big Co-op store which is now boarded-up
