Agree, it's a different kind of person that embraces solitude to that degree.

I have tried to imagine the thoughts of Neal Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin. Landing on the moon in the lunar module, never been done for real EVER before, no chance of rescue if anything went wrong. The mind-strength to deal with that must be immense.

Such things could be seen as brave or foolish but I believe there is something in-between that not many have been gifted with.

If it all became too much they could always step out into the Hollywood sunshine for a breather.

I plan to head off into the Pacific for a couple of years from the end of summer 2027. Many years ago I sailed from Tahiti to Aus, this time I will be single handed onboard my 12m steel yacht "Effie" . Naturally, the colour scheme is entirely deliberate.

Got into these videos a few months ago and love them. Wanting to have a go myself as sailing boats are fairly cheap but at 68 I sense that ship truly has sailed. Love the round the UK ones like Bumbling Sailor and Sam Sails.

Know a couple of people with sailing boats so may give it a go in the summer as crew to see if I want to make a hobby of it.

There are quite a few YT channels with sailing couples and families. One of the best is Sailing Florence. Started in Portsmouth about 7 years ago and sailed around the world, came back and have recently sailed around the UK. We have friends we met in the Bahamas who bought a hurricane damaged boat in the Caribbean and refitted it. Their channel is “sailing zephyr “. Also checkout Sam Holms sailing. He went solo to Hawaii in a 26ft sailboat and then went solo across the Atlantic. We live in a community where we have 3 couples that have sailed around the world including a couple that bought up 2 kids in the process.

No, this is not another midlife crisis thread.

I have recently started following a couple on insta who are sailing across the Atlantic in a 40 ft yacht. I mean, WTAF. On the odd occasion, when the weather is nice and the sea calm it looks idilic. More often though, it looks terrifying. Yesterday's post had them hunkering down inside with the hatches closed and being tossed around....let's not forget they are literally a 1000 miles from anywhere. Another day they were in 4m high swells and waves, again 1000 miles from anywhere. They do not look scared at all, allegedly they enjoy it. What is something on the yacht breaks, the radio breaks....who will save you? What if the yacht capsizes? Who will save you?

Are there any lunatics on this sight sailed across the Atlantic, or another ocean?
Me and @HantsSeagull have sailed from Emsworth to the IOW in a 30ish ft, iirc he’s sailed to France in too , but the Atlantic, now that’s nuts, it was bad enough in a Pussers War Canoe

I’m not sure where you get the idea that yachts are fairly cheap. Add on maintenance, mooring fees and insurance etc and I can assure you they are not cheap.

Can't wait for the 'Bars showing the game in the middle of the Pacific Ocean' thread.

I have been sailing once. It was on a boat owned by British Gas and we left Limmington and sailed around the IOW over a weekend. Was fun, and the last day was a bit choppy but the other two days it was fine. This was in 1990 I think.

Yep - My sister and her husband sailed round the world to Australia in 1996. They bought themselves a steel hulled boat called 'Domain of Bristol' and spent the best part of a year traversing the globe - just the 2 of them in a 40ft yacht!

They did the ARC (Atlantic Rally Crossing) went to Guatemala, Venezuela, Panama Canal, Columbia, Peru, French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia, and arrived in Sydney.

They loved every minute of it and saw numerous Whales, Dolphins etc. Not my cup of tea and when you hear of the piracy that's happened in the last 10 years, makes me pleased my sister has been back on terra-firma in the UK for the last 15 years.

Once in a lifetime trip and it helps her husband works as an expert in navigation and cartography.

Most idiotic sailing related thing I ever did was help launch a bosun dingy off Brighton beach. Force 7 wind and big waves. In the middle of the night.
Narrowly escaping catastrophic injury as we kept getting battered back in our charge out to sea we eventually managed to make it past the breaking waves and hoist sail. We whooped with delight at our success cresting the next wave under sail.
Two waves later a particularly strong gust caught us and snapped the mast off and we had to surf the thing back in, again narrowly avoiding being crushed to death.

A couple of years ago, I 'sailed' round the Caribbean, I hated it. Mind you, there were over a thousand of us but most of them were arrogant northerners ???

Having only ever crossed the Atlantic on a huge cruise liner, I have the utmost respect for anyone that does it in anything smaller!

Indeed. I don't particularly enjoy crossing it in a jumbo jet. Doing it in a sailing boat must be horrendous.

We sailed across the Atlantic both ways going we hit the tail end of two hurricanes that had devastated parts of the Americas, it resulted in some very high seas and we were tossed around quite a lot.

Fortunately we were on a huge Cruise ship not a tiny little yacht they must be mad!

I worked with a bloke who rowed the Atlantic and he never stopped going on about it.
Mind you. If I had rowed across the Atlantic I’d go on about it as well.
