Saffron is very expensive in this country.

Does anybody know where you can buy Saffron Powder I am sure that it is available in Cyprus but have not seen it in this country.

What about in France or Spain?

Apparently it is more expensive per ounce than gold, should be able to get the strands in any half decent supermarket, then just chop it up and add to your cooking.

Used to make it in Saffron Walden just up the road from me.

Not any more though:( :( :(

In the 16th century and 17th century the saffron crocus (crocus sativus) became widely grown in the area. The flower was precious, as extract from the stigmas, the saffron, was used in medicines, as a condiment, as a perfume and as an expensive yellow dye. This industry gave its name to the town and Chipping Walden became Saffron Walden.

By the end of the 18th century the saffron flower was no longer in such demand, and the flower was replaced by malt and barley.

If you go to any supermarket in spain you can pick up a tin of saffron powder AND saffron together.

(the idea being you can use the powder and a little of the saffron )

You can get saffron powder in this country, need to go to a Spanish shop.

If you go to the Spice Shop in Portobello Road you can get Iranian real saffron quite cheaply.

There is a website called saffronspecialist that sells it. I have ordered from them and it's all been OK. The powder does go off though so best to buy in smaller quantities.

Edit - just looked and the powder is not listed on there right now but they sold is as recently as a few weeks ago.

I bought a box of the best Iranian saffron on a visit to the Gulf in 2004, was a bit worried that customs might not believe that it was not a mind bending drug and confiscate it from me...fortunately they didn't.

To make Saffron powder, heat a saucepan till it's hot, drop in a couple of strands of saffron, allow it a few seconds, then tip it into a pestle and morter and grind it to a powder. The infuse it in your cooking.

Beware the stuff they sell in Cyprus, not proper saffron, wrong type of flowers used, doesn't have the flavour/aroma. The proper stuff you get here is generally from Spain, you can get it in the supermarkets, but it you are in a feckless area you might have to ask for it as people do nick it.
