I was about to make the same point about the removal of labelling. I guess the only way to ensure you know the source of any produce once we allow sub standard US food in, is to shop at farm shops and local producers. Or go veggie.

I think supermarkets will be well aware a lot of people won't want to eat shit and will insist on labelling even if the government fail. The greater problem is food processors and the catering sector

As a relatively small country in comparison to the big trade blocks, brexit undoubtedly means we will have to bend over backwards a few times. This is one of them. What did people expect when they voted for it?

A lot of people didn't have a clue what they voted for when they voted. That's why the Public should never have been given a vote on it.

I have studied Law, Economics and Accountancy and I have to be honest. I had absolutely no clue about all the issues it would open up. So I shouldn't have had a say on something I didn't know enough about.

Some people voted for Brexit because they thought all it meant was that it would stop non white migrants arriving in the UK and that their daughters would get a Council house as soon as they got pregnant.

To ask them to vote on which ingredients should or shouldn't be in a tube of toothpaste to safeguard people's health was stretching it a bit far if we thought anyone had the slightest clue about what we were all voting for.

I hear all the time, unequivocally, that 17.4m people voted for lower food standards, they knew what they voted for, they knew this would happen in 2016 and the vote last night to reject amendments to maintain food standards is the will of the people

Yes we do import meat, but at least it is required to meet our standards.

Also EU standards aren't perfect, I'd never buy Danish pork because ours is simply a better product

We need to offer better standards than Europe, USA and Europe. I hope this happens but I'm not at all confident

There was a Poll last week which asked British voters who they would vote for if they could vote in the US Election. Guess what - 80% said they would vote for Donald Trump.

Seems like the UK Electorate would be quite happy to pull the hood over their own heads on the way to the Gallows.

I really need to think of an equally scathing, ridiculous, insulting term for Labour supporters. Maybe plebs, halfwits, cockroaches, contagion, or plain old simple dirt on my shoe? But then again, I actually don’t feel the need to hate all those with differing political opinion to myself, it reduces those that do to Trump level in my opinion.

I don't hate people with political opinions that differ from mine. I'll confess one thing though. I have an adamantine distaste for any individual who is so content with our already inadequate animal welfare standards that they don't give a flying fart when self-serving politicians claim to be speaking for us when they embrace even worse standards.

If you're one such person, that's a shame. I like your football team though.

Plenty of farmers voted for Brexit, or supported it judging by the signs you see on many farmers fields. Unlucky for them when we start sourcing much cheaper meat / food from outside the country than we do now

Am I led to believe nobody on here buys bags of ready washed salad leaves from the supermarket? Same amount of chlorine used in the wash. Do we not immerse ourselves in chlorine every time we use the swimming pool? I know I do but I shower immediately afterwards, I wash salad leaves before use and wash chicken before use.
