Safe Standing Areas

Judging from the forum and the Facebook group, the campaign will fail. It's not as if they've built a serious case for action beyond pretty much saying 'wouldn't it be nice if we had a choice to sit down or stand up?'

It's all about choice these days.....or so they'd have you believe.

It'll never happen, despite it being the lowest level of common sense and stating the bleeding obvious that standing is perfectly safe apart from maybe at Premier League level where overcrowding might be an issue once in a blue moon.

Sadly I think you're right THPP. The Premiership will never go for it which means by default it's unlikely to happen in the Football League, even if it has the support of some clubs. Any club that aspires to getting into the Premiership won't want the possibility of having expensive redevelopments to their ground in order to qualify.

'Safety' and 'comfort' seem to be the over-riding values at football matches these days. I think they trump 'choice' in this respect.

Now, there is a case to be made that safety and comfort doesn't necessarily mean you have to have all-seater stadium, that the Taylor Report response to Hillsborough was an over-reaction.

However, the SUSD website does nothing to dismantle the assumptions that have prevailed since 1989. It seems to be doing nothing to speak into the concerns of the people at the top it needs to get on board.

It's a nice try but as I alluded to before, any campaign that includes a Facebook Group isn't likely to be speaking to or influencing the people it needs to. Part of the problem with the internet and fb groups, online petitions etc is that it's just too easy to start 'mass' campaigns. Often the requisite thought and strategies just aren't there first.

I completely agree.

I'm saying if you can't support something, don't say anything at all.

You're saying something you wouldn't say to someone's face.

what are you barking of about now?

who are you to tell me that I can't say what I choose? of course i'd say it to someones face, why wouldn't I?

Dont get me wrong, i'd love to see standing at football again- but i'm not naive enough to think a facebook group is going to brng back the terraces.

It's not just a facebook group though is it. And anyway a facebook group got Rage Against The Machine to Christmas number 1.

How would you go about getting terraces/standing back?

After all, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Great to see a fair response to this. We are currently looking for many more members so are advertising the campaign across as many clubs as possible. Obviously at the moment our actual numbers are too low for a big change and cause enough media attention; but the difference is from our campaign to others is our potential numbers. Two buzz words/phrases are very much apart of our campaign; "Choice" and "Common Sense". Every week we see thousands upon thousands choosing to stand in seating areas, or choosing terraces over seating, we just need to get these people into the campaign. We have joined with the FSF which will help us for more coverage and they have much more expertise in connections between authorites and supporters. I agree with the facebook jibes on here a bit, but it showed our potential supporters, we managed to get 1000 members on that page in 48 hours.

Whats the situation at Brighton for homes games by the way? Many standing? How are the stewards? Also at aways game what sort of majority attempt to stand?

Our stewards are really relaxed and positively encourage standing in your seats...

As for the campaign I think some people are being unnecessarily negative about it. We all know it's a good idea and the majority of fans would welcome the choice to stand in terraced areas again but if it's ever going to happen in this country people need to make known their support.

Get behind it, come on, it won't hurt

Nice one. I, for one, hope your campaign succeeds. One thing I'd say is that your website do not seem to clearly articulate why your want safe standing beyond the rationale of 'giving people a choice.' I mean, I think 'giving people a choice' in life is a good thing, even a nice thing. But the content of the campaign doesn't call people to take action. There is nothing urgent at stake.

You mentioned joining up with FSF to access their connections and expertise. This sounds wise. I think you also need to be clearer about what your proposal for safe standing is. And when it's a done deal, that safe standing has been agreed and will happen, whose handshake do you need to get for it to happen? Do you know?

Not Luton! Thank God
It's not going to happen until football clubs want it. The reason they and the football authorities don't want it is that terracing is connected, with some justification, with trouble both accidental and criminal. That creates a negative image for investors, sponsors and non-core supporters that just wouldn't be acceptable.

How so? And how is this different from seating? Do the 56 people who died in the Bradford fre not count? What about the Irish fans assaulted by England fans who ripped seat out to use as missiles? That's a fairly negative image that most people would find unacceptable.

Hillsborough? Heysel?

But more than this its the image it creates. Being on terracing moving around as the crowd surges and moves around is great fun, but the image it portrays is not the family friendly one that football wants.

why not just have a normal seating section but with the premise that when you buy the ticket your buying it in a "seated but standing area" meaning you're allowed to stand during the game? that way we all win as we can sit down at half-time!!
Would generate the same atmosphere as a standing area IMO

First of all it is not terracing that we are looking to put in, we understand that will probably never happen in the top two divisions, but of course want terracing to be kept in the other divisions. We are proposing the Safe Standing Kombi Seats, these have foldable seats and a crush barrier on every row all the way across, seen here:
http://www.fsf.org.uk/media/uploaded/safe%20standing.jpg
From these they is no chance of surges etc that was seen on terraces of the past, the capacities would be kept the same or maybe very slighty increased. There is no reason why these cannot be added to ANY ground in Britain, most sensibly lower tier behind a goal.

yeah those seat things would work alright and I agree, no reason why they cant have them, if they increase capacity ever so slightly then football clubs would surely consider it.

Which leads me to ask this, why not us at Falmer? could we not of pushed for that design in the North Stand? would it work properly? do the rules state we cant have that type of seating/standing combo?
