One of the biggest contributions to bigotry, discrimination, ignorance , xenophobia and hate is continually ignoring the public's legitimate concerns over mass immigration.

I would argue this result has just about saved us from a rapid rise in support for extremist parties that are on the march across Europe. People might not like UKIP but they are a model of tolerance compared with some on the continent.

This result in not going to stop mass immigration but will, in the minds of the bigoted, discriminatory, ignorant, xenophobic and hate-filled, legitimise their beliefs and allow them to express their feelings far more freely. It will only serve to increase the divides in the country, it's already started, we're seeing numerous examples. As a by product, it will also help England and Scotland divide.

I haven't really supported the England team since about 1992 tbh after Graham Taylors reign, & have followed the Italians since the WC in 1990 - so last night summed up exactly why I haven't given a toss about England for the last quarter of a century.

"Allowing myself a smug little smile & chuckle after that...Unrealistic hype, expectations & delusions for weeks - culminating in yet another abject failure. Its like a broken record for the umpteenth year. Cue all the ranting...."

After putting the above on my FB page last night I was told it was a "pathetic post, you're English - get a grip". This unfortunately from someone who grew up an Albion fan, but has since switched allegiance to support and watch Crystal Palace....Of course, he's free to do what he wants, and its no skin off my nose - but I know which I consider worse!!

The next England team should be pulled from leagues lower than the Premier League. We know the Championship to be one of the toughest leagues in the world with some very good players. Stocko over Joe Hart for instance.

Goodness, all this because people disagree with you. I think if the vote had gone the other way I would have been a lot more gracious. So much doom and gloom on this thread. The football was shocking but this is a young team and I think they will improve which makes them different from previous failed England teams. Some of the players (esp Kane) looked jaded coming into the tournament. Perhaps the competiveness of our domestic football means we just cant expect too much in international football other than enjoying the ride.

I’m not it is down to the competitiveness of the league they play in. Many of the foreign players seem fine. We had a 4 day gap between wales and slovakia and made 6 changes, plus the subs. Then a week later played Iceland. That is ample time to recover and be fit. These super fit sportsmen with special diets and massages after every game. One footy match a week shouldn't matter, half didn’t even play in the last game.

Re Brexit i have seen a change already. I speak to people i know, people down the pub and it genuinely is scary hearing there strong views. The number of racist news articles i have seen since the referendum is upsetting. Reports of racism i think the BBC said has quadrupled and Brexit is the vale the racists can hide behind, especially as they now feel that the majority country feel the same.

I keep trotting this fact out but no one chooses to listen from the Bexit voters... 0.5% is immigration from the EU ... of that 98% pay tax (that's way more into government coffers than they take out.. WAY MORE). Most immigration is from outside of the EU.

Heard on the radio several people phoning up, saying that they pay tens of thousands in tax a year but no longer feel welcome and are moving abroad taking their skills with them.

Carry on as we are and we'll push all the good people who have progressed this country to being the 5th richest nation away and make the people left very afraid.

oh and by the way because you are so scared of immigration you might want to know:

France will likely let all immigrants through to Dover and are likely to stop their checks at Calais (was setup up by the UK with the EU) they have said they won;t stop but give it time.

When Scotland have referendum and leave us, that's a whole border we will have to manage. Shall we build Hadrians wall again or maybe do a trump and get the scots to build the wall.

If Scotland and Ireland don't leave how will stop immigration over the NIreland and Ireland borders...

Oh and i have heard Farage, Johnson and that other UKIP guy already say that they cannot do anything against immigration

I've been saying this for years - that there are players in the Championship and lower down that would better represent England. I would advocate that all managers regardless of what division they play in are invited to send their best players to an England training camp. We may end up with a team composed of players from the lower divisions but it hasn't exactly harmed Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland has it - they play with passion and pride.

Obviously there has always been racism but a sharp increase since the referendum. These incidents were also linked to Brexit because they were cited in the attacks. 'GO HOME WE VOTED YOU TO LEAVE', 'BREXIT' type shit. I have read more than just a handful of examples. Even people borm here who have not even come from the EU are being abused. I work with a couple of Polish people they have received abuse.

Why the knee jerk defence. Why can it not be admitted that this referendum has increased this behavior. it won't reflect on you

I chuckled at the Icelandic equaliser, I laughed out loud and clapped as they took the lead, in the full expectation that England, my England, would beat the pesky Viking types as the game went on.

I have watched England both home and away, not as much as many but more than most. I have rejoiced at our occasional victory snatched from the jaws etc, more often I have despaired at our inability to perform on the big stage. Sometimes I have cried, other times I have not behaved as well as I should have done, sorry.

Tonight? I am shocked, shocked that I could not really care. My love for this country, and particularly our football team, is gone. We really do have a culture of self gratification, of 'I am worth it', and much of it stems from our obsession with football, especially the Premier League. Money, celebrity, fame, beauty, and further down the line a flash motor, the biggest TV possible, and that oh so necessary designer clobber.

But to be more accurate, it is not about football, it is about our culture. The one where we as a country believe that we are better than the rest, better than Europe, that we can take on the world and win. As a nation we have voted for Brexit, cos we know best. Fxxk the French/Germans and the refugees, fxxk the fact that every economic expert said don't do it, fxxk everyone that dares not to have the Bulldog Bobby attitude.

Yeah, I am still whinging about the referendum, but I accept the decision. I am just gutted that my opinion of everything England is now so jaundiced. There really is no reason for pride in our country anymore.

I don't hate them. They are just shit and I really shouldn't be as gutted as I am right now as all they've done over the years is let me down time after time after time. But it hurt last night. Not just the performance but for other reasons you've mentioned. I too was sat in a pub with people who were genuinely pleased that England were shit so it gave them something to moan about. The majority of these folks were not what I would call football people. I expect all of them will be cheering on the dour Scot at Wimbledon and the smiling Somalian in Rio with a lot more passion than they showed towards the national side of the national sport. It's a sad reflection of how football is seen in this country even by football fans.

It will be good to get back to August and wholeheartedly caring about the Albion again.

I suspect real cases of abuse are not common, but those who are foreign and with ethnic roots are feeling isolated

My son's best friend is 3rd gen south-Asian. His parents are 2nd gen born here and even though 100% British, they have taken Brexit harder than anyone I know. Pretty bad when I saw the lads mother crying at my kids sports day last friday
