Haven't been to Auschwitz but I've been to Dachau and Sachsenhausen which I imagine are very similar, very sad places indeed.

India, and in particular Delhi - The extreme poverty alongside the obvious wealth is heartbreaking and it's here and now, thousands of people living, eating, shitting and sleeping by the street is scandalous. Hurts every time.

Many a true word spoken in jest, seeing the small memorial with the British,Canadian,French and Merchant navy flags always strikes a sad note when driving past.Total waste of many young mens lives. It may not rank along side some of the shockingly sad places mentioned but each soldier/sailor who died was somebody's son.

I remember spending a few days in Dieppe a while ago (off topic but a very nice town to visit). There was quite a lot dotted around to commemorate the raid, including a nice floral rendition of the Canadian flag beneath the castle in a small memorial garden. Along the "prom" was a small plaque commemorating the death of the first two US soldiers to die in action in Europe - I believe they were seconded to the Canadian Army.

Having read a book about the raid it appears that the actually point of it still uncertain. Dieppe was apparently of no particular strategic importance and the outcomes of such an action as a "fact find" for D-day seem tenuous.
