I've just been thinking about this.

A plausible scenario is that China agrees to pay off the debts as they come in return for as yet unspecified favours. They have form of doing similar in Africa.

This week has confirmed to me that Russia is in it's death throes as a serious international player. I think they'll end this war as little more than a vassal state to China, who would love a country with a seat at the security council, a deadly arsenal and an endless capacity for doing dirty work under their thumb.

The West v China is shaping up to be the real battle of the century ... and Russia are a pawn in this match

This is kind of where I am - I cannot see how Russia gets out of this. This isn't over quickly - and the longer it goes on the more screwed they are in terms of military resource and death count - and economically they are cut off with practically no import / export, can't participate in global markets etc

I think the noises coming out of the Kremlin in the last few hours are positive for everyone who wants to stop the war. The West really needs to ramp up support, militarily, socially and economically. It's getting on for two weeks now so there is really is no excuse for the West not increasing military aid, economic and social sanctions now they have had time to investigate, plan and react.

The pressure on Putin seems to be getting results, so let's increase it NOW.

Yes, I think that they can actually defeat him, it wont be easy, but its possble, the longer this lasts with western money and arms, the more the pendulem swings. The Bellingcat analysis said Russia had about 10-14 days of missiles, munitions, and some of them take months to manufacure, theyve had devasatating losses in men and equipment. 2 Military experts said their efforts in South have petered out, today they flew 30 helicopters into an airfield near Kherson and Ukraine smashed them all. They missiled a russian ship last night too, thats burning in the black sea. You do not let this type of fanatical, terrorist enemy off the hook as they weaken imho, They had most of the advantage, as the pendulem swings you dont deal.

Did Putin tell one truth in this, honour a single word or previous agreement about security? Right now he has bungled into a position where he is taking unsustainable losses on the battlefield and economy is being hammered at home. if you let him off, he doesnt give up on his aspiration, he learns the lessons, re equips and comes back again from a position of strength.

Reparations, stability will only come from a Putin defeat, any deal can only be with Ukraine territorial integrity being respected in full. Russia has no place in the decision making.

zelensky told them to do one btw. The Right decision
Yes, Putin has to go otherwise he will try again and be even more merciless.

This sounds promising...

If this offer really is a genuine one, if I was Ukraine I'd tell Putin to go **** himself.
To go from yesterday still spouting off that he was not going to stop until Russia had forcibly taken Ukraine, to this, he must be worried about not being able to see this through.
Whether it's pressure from the Russian people, the strain on the Russian economy due to sanctions or maybe pressure from all the billionaires who are unable to get to their fortunes, the fact that his military hardware is falling apart, rumours of deserters and even more funding and sanctions on the horizon. Not to mention the way the Ukrainian people have been fighting back.
If the west keep supporting Ukraine then Putin will fail, and I think he knows it.

Ukrainians seem to be putting up a good resistance to the ground forces. They just need more hardware to deal with the aerial threat. Checking the Ukraine defence site on Insta they are taking out plenty of convoys

Hmmm - get shot by their opposition or get executed by their own. Not much of a deal unless there was enough of them of the same mind to swap sides. Mostly poor conscripted kids who have been brainwashed by Putin’s henchmen.

Saying that, we don’t really know what’s going on with the 40 mile convoy that seems to have stalled and looking like sitting ducks. Have all the drivers done a runner?

I know, brainwashed soldiers is not something new, I just can’t get my head around randomly shelling civilians and houses and flats but you make a good point. Time for a second Russian Revolution.

The Kremlin has laid down what is wants that’s clearly not going to be acceptable to the Ukrainians but negotiations start from a position of where each party wants to get to.
The Kremlin laid down those same demands a week ago: surrender and we'll stop.

Rumoured they have run out of fuel and don't have enough military grade fuel tankers in reserve.

If there’s no fuel it’s going nowhere.

Is that the popular interpretation of " Decimated " ? or the actual definition of " Decimated " which is 10%
Decimated is probably about right, for the percentage of troops they've lost.

Russia is being humiliated by Ukraine. It is now day 12 and they still haven't taken Kyiv, with their huge war machine. Instead, it's stuck out in the Ukrainian countryside, and the troops have gone walkabout.

Putin has been planning this for years, waiting for the ideal moment. He has made a huge miscalculation, misjudging the resistance the Ukrainians would offer, and misjudging the unity and resolve of the west. In doing so, he has shown the world how mediocre his forces are, what a brazen liar he is, and has trashed the reputation of Russia for a generation.

Western sanctions will ensure the Russian economy is crippled for years. His war won't hold back his perceived 'expansion' of NATO, and will actually result in the polar opposite of his key objective. His brutal aggression has ensured more NATO, not less. He may win the war, but he has already lost the peace. The whole episode has been an absolute disaster for him personally and for Russia.
