As a Southport fan, I am of course happy that they stayed up, but what a dreadful way to do it.
I only hope Diamonds can find a way back from this, doesn't seem long ago we (brighton) were playing them!

(Sorry for spelling, I'm on the phone) Also I know there is another thread about Rushden, but the matter deserves its own.

Gutted for them, remember a great night there when Coppell was manager, Knight was everyone's darling and Zesh Rehmann looked the real deal with a cracking goal. Nice compact ground too.

Surprised that given the fact that they seem to have the infrastructure that nobody has taken them over, not that I know anything of their current financial situation.

There are a litany of non-league clubs over stretching themselves in the search for success only to go to the wire. Lewes, Crawley, Weymouth, Salisbury to name but a few. They are basically cheating, while other clubs ensure their grounds are up to standards and control their wage structures, others go in search of glory and success based on a huge unsustainable gamble.

In terms of Max Griggs, he handed the club back to the fans in 2005, and so they've had 6 years to cope without him.

edit: I should note that it is of course the poor fans that always suffer, and not much your everyday supporter can do about it.

Always had a soft spot for Southport, my first wife came from there, i went to Haigh Avenue twice and watched the Alb there.
How long they been out of the league now ???
Any chance of them ever returning soon ???

I live not far away and went there this season to see them stuff York City 4-0 (day we beat Watford in the cup). Really surprised they were struggling with relegation; just very inconsistent. Not sure the ground would be up to league standard now (very little cover or seating) or if they've got the financial wherewithal. Nice Social Club under the main stand with real ale from the Southport Brewery though!

Speculation in some circles that Kettering, who are not far off being made homeless, might merge with R&D and move there instead.

Despite the stadium being to Football League standard and the conference centre and the superb training facilities indoor and outdoor, I am afraid that the club got too big too quickly. The terminal illness started once Max Griggs decided he couldnt throw any more money at it! It seems a shame that all these excellent facilities may now got to waste.

Perhaps AFC Wimbledon might like to relocate there?? Just a thought!

I fear for Crawley, it's one that's going to end in tears. Steve Evans..great manager..I'm not so sure. I think the cheque book does all the work.
