Also a story that Fawcett were going to “nobble” Varndean’s Steve Ovett before school sports at Withdean, however in true Eton Rifles fashion the brains beat the brawn.
This did happen at Withdean. My brother was in the changing room when a couple of boys had digs at Overt. Must have been 1971 or 1972.

I didn't go to school round here but have a fond memory of a psycho headteacher at my school pulling off his belt to whip and violently assault some boys, looping it, raising it over his head...and catching and ripping down the light fitting. When of course he then took out his increased rage on the pupils.

Teachers used to get away with being absolute nutters.
Madame Levi took French at St Nick's junior school in 1967. The day after she slapped my face (front hand, back hand), she was escorted off the premises by headmaster Humphreys after giving a boy ten slaps round the face, whereupon he marched out and home and got his mum round. These days with similar antics Levi would soon be telling a big lass 'yes I am your little bitch' in Holloway.

A couple of snowball fights but nothing serious.

It was all "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough", but nobody was.

Very much.....

Without wishing to derail this delightful thread....

Every time I hear this story a bit has been added. The manoeuvre you describe is almost impossible without super strength or an extremely lightweight pupil 🤔🤔
Harry Allt, the man, the myth, the legend, has gained superstar status for generations of students at Varndean. He could quite possibly have had superhuman strength.

But having been taught by him, and personally witnessed his temper go from 0-100 in an instant, the dangling episode is eminently believable.

I left Blatchington Mill in 88 but I seem to recall some trouble a few years later with Hove Park which resulted in someone house getting trashed ?? Think it made the local news on TV
Kings Manor went to your school in 86/87 i think. We went for a walk through your school in afternoon lessons. Kicked of at Aldrington station looked like the whole school turned out.

Went to Varndean (1st year it became a mixed school) , I remember a few tear-ups with Stringer ,some epic snowball fights. However my brother went to Fawcett in the 70’s and swears blind they had a mass brawl with THE ARMY !! Apparently they had come on a recruiting drive and the pupils took umbrage. They were firing rockets at the helicopter as it took off with shaken soldiers inside.

My brother tells a lovely story about his best mate at school (Blessed Robert Southwell - Goring) who after an altercation in a football match again Lancing College was invited by their sports master to settle their differences in the gym with the gloves on. My brother acted as a second whilst the posh kid got his gloves laced up. Another lad informed my bruv that the other chap was in fact a southern schools champion. Cut to my brothers mate upon hearing that walked across the ring and laid him out before the bell or before the lad even got his gloves on.

The next rugby match was played under a veil of secrecy. The home team was locked in the changing room from 2:15 until Longhill arrived and when they did, they came over the cross country course with a police escort.

Small town England.

So over The Highway from Peacehaven, avoiding the Valley Drive hideout?

My Dad’s school Queen’s Park used to street fight the Briighton College boys in the early 50’s. He said the BC boys weren’t walkovers due to intense boxing training there.

Although it was pretty much a one off thing remember St Christopher’s School running round the perimeter of Wish Park in Hove. We West Hove Junior School gave them various punches, trip ups each time they passed round. We never saw them again as their school obviously chose a different place in the future to run at.

I have some lovely stories too. Complete bollox, but they've earn't me a drink or two, and I didn't even have to claim they were my brothers/mates/cousins

No love lost between Uckfield Comprehensive and Crowborough Beacon back in the day (The Southdown Stagecoach 729 Derby, as we’d probably have to call it now).

Always rumours that the Beacon boys were going to turn up at Uckfield carnival each year for a mass brawl behind the Waltzers with rolled-up copies of the Friday Ad but inevitably they never showed. Or, thinking about it, maybe they came by train instead and we missed them?

I wasn't taught by him, but..... Mr Cope at HGSB apparently, plucked from a pantheon of anecdotage, once came into a class and found some sort of childish obscenity on the blackboard and asked "which **** wrote that?" I remember reading that on the HGSB thread on NSC V2 (this is V3) in around 2000

Are you sure about that? I ran for Varndean at a couple of sports days and I think Steve Ovett had moved on to higher things by then.

However, we had a super sprinter called Paul Perry, he wasn't Ovett class, but he was pretty rapid and tore up the 100m. A few Fawcett boys paid him a visit and I'm not sure whether he was due to run again or whether it was just his 'reward'. He wasn't in a good way.

I didn't get the attention of Fawcett but I remember running a cross country past Stringer and someone luzzed half a brick at me, caught me on my knee and forced me to limp the rest of the race. I came 72nd and to compound my misery, I got a detention for finishing so low.

The army story is not quite true.
Everyone from Fawcett was on the top field, opposite Hollingbury Industrial Estate, the Army or maybe the Royal Marines were putting on a display (maybe they were recruiting)
Anyhow just as the helicopter landed some sort of explosive device went off, I thought it was part of the display at the time but very close to the crowd of pupils.
There wasn’t a brawl but the army lads were obviously not impressed.

The explosive device didn’t actually go bang but there was a big cloud of smoke, it was made by this lad in the year above, he was a decent quiet lad but a bit of a boffin. Apparently some of the lads in his year convinced him that it would be funny to make the ‘bomb……I’m sure he was bullied into it.
