Rule Britania

We are not supposed to provide health care to people not meant to be in the country. If she knew this, yet still came, she cannot complain.

It's akin to breaking into someone's house (of course knowing that you shouldn't) then complaining when they attack and injure you.

That's what is lacking today - no sense of personal responsibility, the "it's not my fault" crowd, and knowingly breaking the rules and expecting someone else to clear up the mess when it all goes wrong.

here hare here
Taking up a hospital bed that could have been used by someone who had actually paid into the NHS
I am tired of people coming to this country and sponging off us.
I am also tired of people who have never done a days work in their lives and whose standard of living is better than those of us who actually go out to work
It is time for a sea change in our attitudes
Simply it is time for a change

I think the point that has been overlooked is that she came to this country on a student visa , so if she became ill she would have been entitled to NHS treatment. It seems callous that she was deported whilst still receiving treatment for cancer. Ghana , formerly the Gold Coast used to be part of the British Empire. This would mean that their health service is based on our system but in this case sending her back resulted in her death.

There are loads of people here on "Student Visas" its the easiest way to get in. Most of the colleges are bogus (approx 40% of the colleges stated on the visa's don't actually exist) The students can only work a maximum of 20 hours however are working much more to make money and send it home. I met a Nigerian "Student" the other day who told me she fully intends to overstay her visa, have her baby here and then claim asylum. She plans to use the NHS to look after her through her pregnancy and then thinks that as her child will be born here she will be able to stay.

Just because a Dog is born in a stable it doesn't make it a Horse !!!

The Government is at fault then by allowing the embassy/consulate to issue student visas if they suspect the motive is to come here and overstay. Other countries like France wont let visitors on student visas to overstay and then claim asylum - they just deport them without appeal.

We're bound by our own law and international law not to deport someone in cases where it could lead to their death. This obviously refers to execution/persecution rather than illness, however how important is the difference?

The way some people on this board are talking, you'd think every asylum-seeker and illegal was getting life-supporting treatment on the NHS, draining the economy. This truly is a one-off case, as in fact some posters have mentioned. If you were dealing with the thousands that could without hinderance be deported, then you could make what is quite obviously the moral, compassionate and correct choice and allow this woman to stay, at least to complete treatment.

Agreed. There was a Pakistani family living in Grimsby , they had settled here in 2003 claiming asylum and had integrated into British society. Their claim was turned down and they seemingly had won an appeal to stay here. However late last year they were told they would be deported back to Pakistan ( to make up the quota of failed aylum seekers being returned to their country of origin). They were taken from their house at 6am by immigration officials and police and sent to a holding centre pending a final decision. The father was a human rights lawyer in Pakistan and several close family members had been killed by political groups. Therefore sending him back to Pakistan could have resulted in his and/or the family's death. Needless to say the Immigration Minister upheld the decision to deport this family purely to make the numbers add up.
