Can somebody explain to me, who knows nothing about rugby, why England gave away numerous penalties for not releasing the ball yet in the Ireland v Romania game there has been none. What advantage did England hope to gain by hokding on to the ball? Wouldnt they have been better to not give penalties/points then try to win the ball in open play?
I don't think England gave away that many penalties for not releasing. Their favourite offence was preventing release of the ball at the ruck. But generally teams will hold on to the ball if there's no-one in support and there's a real danger of a counter-attack. It's also true that some refs allow slightly more leeway than others - I only saw a bit of the Ireland v Romania game so I couldn't comment as to how it was reffed

Isnt it one and the same for not releasing either as a player or in the ruck. How long does it take a footballer to realise what a ref will allow and what he is hot on. Plus the players would be told about him in the pre match preperation, why does this not happen in rugby.

Unfortunately English forwards are essentially thick and will give away the same penalty all game. It has always been thus. I was hoping with a French referee we would get a few decisions but it wasn't to be. Hopefully we won't get a South African referee against the Ozzies because we get absolutely feck all from them.

I don't agree. I think the selectors don't want the "baggage" he brings. And probably the other members of the squad might be jealous.

I must confess to being quite excited about the knockout game against Australia. We should have beaten Wales so now the team must be bursting to right that result. Should be a very tense cracker of a game. Cometh the hour cometh the man...maybe!

Why oh why did they not take the kick. A draw would be fine at this stage of the tournament. They were NEVER going to get a try!

If we can beat Australia it sets the following weeks game Wales v Australia up for a sudden death finish as one of them will go out as surely we will beat Uruguay. That will be the big incentive for our players.

No guarantee they would have converted the penalty either, not like it was a simple one.

Apparently Owen Farrell wasnt happy with the kick as it was difficult one to take on and they didnt consider the possibility that Wales would push them over the line
