Cricket world cup drawn out over 42 days to get a result, now we have Rugby Union dragging out the six nations (no rugby this weekend-end) again. What next a three month world cup ? :bigwave:

Nope, just a World Cup in January.

I agree with the idea of making the Cricket World Cup shorter, but I'm not quite sure what you mean about the rugby?

The Six Nations is not obtrusive and doesn't require players to be on tour for 6 weeks - certainly not on the back of a long winter tour. The players also require longer to recover.

How do the length of the tournament and money correlate?

The rugby season is now much longer and more congested due to European competitions, so it makes sense to not burn the players out with a five week spectacular.

The Rugby World cup does throw up a lot of fairly meaningless games between mismatched teams which is similar to the Cricket World Cup. The Six Nations is played over a longer period probably to allow for the huge physical demands placed on the players.... they need time to recover from very intense full contact matches.

Also, unlike football, Rugby Premiership matches are played the same weekends as internationals, thus the teams lose a number of players. The extended format gives a break for the players (physically) and also allows the teams to play players lost to the EPS squad.

As others have said, the RWC is over a longer time, again to allow players to recover.

Dont know how youd even thing about shortening Rugby. You need time to recover from everything. Being a rugby player for 6 years I know all about the toll it does on the body.

It would be good if all these world cups would just revert back to the original format, of the Football world cup.

16 teams 4 groups of 4, quarter finals, semis, & final. All completed in 2 weeks.

& only a 3rd place play off game, if the victor is guaranteed automatic selection for the next world cup.

That way the qualifying rounds only have to find 12 teams resulting in less games.
Which places less conflict on club verse country issues.

Because at the end of the day grass root fans are more interested in the success of the club they support, rather than country.

I know what you mean and you're right. However he does have a point; international tickets are so expensive these days (to say nothing of beer and food) that it makes sense to drag the games out so that the fans' wallets aren't being constantly hit on successive weekends!

Research the ongoing dispute between the RPA, Premier rugby, RFU and clubs and you'll soon see why the competition is drawn out.
It's still only 18 games, that hasn't changed.

Plus the physiological effects of playing test match rugby have been compared to the effects of being in a car crash. You need more than five days to recover, it's not like football where you can play every third day.

I don't see how the time between rugby matches can be shortened. I play rugby at probably the lowest adult level possible, and I still sometimes take a day or two to recover from a tough game. As Dr Q also mentioned, the gaps allow fringe England players to be released back to their clubs in the off weeks, keeping them sharp in case they are called into the team - as demonstrated by Matt Banahan's immense performance against Northampton at the Rec two weeks ago.

I don't follow cricket, so can't really comment on that.

The FIVE nations was played over five weeks (it would be impossible to play it over four). Now it's the Six nations it's played seven weeks to give players rest time
