According to Weather Underground the wind was WSW 38.9km/h in Brighton at 9.50pm. That's force 6 so definitely a windy night.

Why is it when you drop a slice of buttered toast it ALWAYS lands butter side down ?

I actually know the answer to this. It is mainly due to the fact that the height at which it is dropped is generally roughly the same ie work top height or waist height when carrying a plate. This height is only enough for the toast slice to rotate halfway, thereby landing butterside down.
